Website Idea II

ok, I have another website idea, please tell me what you think:

A site dedicated to providing a library of avatars. Pictures, photos and cartoons could all be on there. All the avatars on there would be free.

Users could submit their own as well as the webmasters doing their own and scouting some out and then asking permission

There could also be some funny phrases to put in your signature.

I'm also thinking of offering custom avatar/signature service.

The trouble is though, I dont have any coding skills so I would have to use a service for setting it up provided by another website, or one of you guys here could help me out.

I have checked out the competition; the only one that seems to be a threat is avatarity.com but I don't think they have a very good selection.

Ok, what does everybody think and does anybody want to embark on this project with me?

Sounds good. One thing I've seen that's really popular is services that allow people to make signature graphics and stuff. So if you could do this in a way that would allow people to personalize their avatars somehow that would be even better.

You mean an application actually in the site? Boy that is WAY beyond my capabilities!

you could probably do it with image magick (http://www.imagemagick.org/) and there are lots of scripts out there to add words to images.

It's not a bad idea, you'd of course want to categorize them, and have different sets. You'll just have to make sure you have an .htaccess file set to prevent image leeching.

Seems like I say this a lot but you'd run the risk of copyright infringement lawsuits. I checked out that competition site and most things there are 99% probably illegal. People make and use unauthorized avatars all the time (like sports logos too) without much risk but if you had a website and were making money off of giving away images you don't own the copyrights to.... well just don't do it. (I've seen lots of AIM icon sites and they're all totally crap because they're all homemade.)

Yeah, well I plan to make it 100% legal.

Thanks for that image site link.
