web site on CD.....how?
How would you put a web site catalog on CD for offline viewing?
I have searched for info on this on the internet and have only found one company that sells the software to do this which I can not afford.
I already have "Adeptec Direct CD" and "Adaptec Easy CD Creator". Is anyone familiar with either of these? And will they do this? The instructions are a little confusing to me at this point.
I have already given it a shot to see if I could do it but you have to pull each page up like you would on a floppy disk. I want to be able to go from page to page as you would on the internet. I guess you could say that I want an "interactive CD". ??

I guess what you would have to do is make the web site contain all "relative" links (e.g. NOT /page.html, rather simply "page.html").... Then, maybe name a page "STARTHERE.html" - that page could contain a list of all the links on your CD.

You can make a autorun file, I've done it and it works fine just make a file called autorun.ini and burn it on the cd's root all you need to put in it is this:
[autorun]
OPEN=index.html
And if they havent turned off autorun it will popup in there default web browser. If you realy want to get advanced then you can get MicroWeb from http://www.indigostar.com/ I've got it and it will do basicly everything you would want to put a web page on a cd including running cgi off of the cd alowing for dynamic content. But it cost alot so I dont know if it will fit your needs.

Ok. So all I put on the autorun.ini file is:
[autorun]
OPEN=index.html
Is that all and do i put it exactly as you have it???
What do you mean by burning it on the cd's "ROOT"? Do you mean just include this file when burning it?
Sorry for my ignorance.

the cd's root would be the lowest directory on the cd so say your cdrom is your D: drive the cd root would be D:\
so you would put the autorun file on as D:\autorun.ini
so you would just burn it on the cd just like that. If you have any more questions just ask I've made 100's of web page cds.

Dukk,
Before I mess up any more CD's let me see if you can figure out what I am doing wrong.
I made the autorun.ini file and placed it with the html files for the web site. All of my images are in a file called images. Like this for example:
autorun.ini
index.html
index2.html
index3.html
IMAGES (folder)
I then opened my Adaptec CD burner and clicked "create data cd". Then moved all files for the web site, including the autorun.ini and created the cd.
It still won't auto run. I can go to my D drive and open the CD that way and then click the index.html and view the site like that but I want it to open by itself. Can you tell by the info that I have given you if I did anything wrong?

Ok...done deal. But now when I open the autorun.exe like it says to in the readme file, I get a little box pops up saying that it can't locate the file.
I haven't put it on a disk this time because I downloaded HTML Autorun last week and got the same error message with it on disk.
There has got to be some little something that I am not doing right.
Getting frustrated!! Any more suggestions??

Do you have autorun turned on?
Do your normal installation CDs autorun? Like MS Office and like products? If autorun's turned off, there's nothing you can do.

If it is turned off, you can just turn it back on, go get a copy of Tweak UI off os Microsoft.com its easyer than searching the registry for the key. but eather way would work.

Boy this is getting more complicated by the day. Yes my other CD's auto run. My daughters CD games auto run too so I suppose that it is turned on.
I looked at the Tweek UI and that looks a bit scairy for me to tackle. I will have to read it in more detail before I'll know if I want to do that. I am really afraid that I will mess something up. As for the REGISTRY....EEEKKKK!!!!! I won't even go there...haha!!
Last night I got some error message about a shell.exec(think that is what it was called) file while attempting to do another CD. I wonder if that has anything to do with what the Tweek UI will fix?
I am about ready to give up on this little venture. Thanks for trying to help me though. If you run across something later that is a little more simple will you let me know?

I'm in the same boat and have been doing some research.
To the best of my knowledge, this only works for executables. For HTML, adapt as follows:
[autorun]
OPEN=start index.html
save it as autorun.inf (not ini)
I just tried it and it works like a charm. Now, if I can only figure out how to do this on a Mac...
by the way, I'm using Adaptec as well.

I must be loosing it. I thought I posted a reply but I guess I hit the back button instead of submit.
Thanks Taff for the info. I tried your suggestion but I still can't get the CD to auto run. Isn't it supossed to come on by itself when you put it in the CD ROM? When I create the CD, all the html files, autorun.inf and images are on the CD so I am pretty sure I am creating the CD correctly.
When you do your CD in the Adaptec are you making the CD in Data CD or Direct CD?
Oh well, my daughter has another CD frisby to play with.
Would you give me instructions on how you did your file paths and any other info that may help me figure this out. I don't know what I am doing wrong. If you have a link on how to do this that would be great also.
thanks,

hmmm.
Is the CD working other than the autorun aspect? ie, can you browse for the index and start navigating the site?
If so, your problem lies with either the inf file or your autorun capability.
I created using data cd (direct is for copying I believe)
My file paths are all relative, no different than if I was FTPing this thing to a server.
The following is the exact content of my autorun.inf:
[AutoRun]
ICON=ggicon.ico
OPEN=start index.html
I will be doing a more complete burn shortly, with PDF files and powerpoint presentations included. I'll let you know if my results vary.
Good luck!

Yes everything is working. I can go to the index and start there and view the whole site. It is just the autorun that isn't working. Like I had told someone earlier who posted to my problem, all of my other CD's (Windows 98, printer CD and all of my daughters CD games) autorun just fine.
What is the ICON=ggicon.ico file that you have? Is that a necessary part?
I also used the data CD in Adeptec to create my CD.
I'll keep trying.

the ICON line is simply to refer to the ico file that you want used as a program icon. Otherwise you get a generic one. This is not related to autorun at all.

Thanks Taff for explaining.
To Kim: I got your message and I say it was right down to the point but it still didn't work. I give up this time. I will just see if I can find someone locally who can help me with this in person.
Thanks for everyones help on this.
