Looks like WASP has apparently retired its Browser Upgrade Campaign. This is good news don't you think?

WASP says, "In the coming months the Web Standards Project plans on helping site builders learn more about using standards intelligently and in a more inclusive manner."

This should be helpful to webmasters. Something good to keep an eye on.

More seriously, I think it's a good idea to be as inclusive as possible. But my concept of "inclusive" doesn't mean "identical".

I have adapted my signature screenshot of what you're supposed to be seeing to be not on the page anymore. Now I have just a link to this: synapticimpulse.com/yuck.php -- guess I'll have to change that reference, eh?

So if you're using something that doesn't support CSS, you still get the content and don't have to worry about feeling insulted unless you want to click the link. Wink

Easy tigers.

From the perspective of standards and supporting them, IE6 fails to meet what all the other browsers of that generation meet. It's the bottom of the pile for its generation. Speaking strictly from the perspective of standards (basic standards, nonetheless) support.

You can like it all you want. It still has a broken box model and fails to support a number of key CSS features.

Also -- yeesh! How many winking smilies do you need to get that I'm ribbing folks who swear by IE?

grr...don't go all offensive on mozilla...mozilla is a project that real people have worked hard on, not some corporate shluffing trying to get money...did i mention that mozilla is open-source?

I have noticed increasingly that as people are building standards compliant sites and are using css for layout that IE 6 fails to display properly and Mozilla and Opera gets it right. This to me says it all.

lol... IE might not be the best browser out there, but at least i dont have to wait 30 seconds for it to load and sit watching a stupid splash screen. I wish you could have a pre-launcher thing for other browsers then i might consider them as my main browser, but i'm too busy to have to sit and wait for simple applications to load.

Ya know what i mean guvner? Wink

Actually, no I don't. I use OSX and rarely have to shut my browser at all. Wink More excitingly, I use Safari and it loads in a blip.

Of course, other browsers aren't tightly wrapped into your operating system. IE takes a longer time to load on my system than Safari, Camino. About the same as N7. But it has poopy bookmark abilities and no tabs, so it only gets to test sites. Wink

standards? i don't care about standards, all i know is that IE always displays my web sites as they should be displayed, and the same cannot be said for most other browsers.

And the fact that you do a *wink* after almost every paragraph you write anyway, means that its hard to tell when you're joking or not, unless of course you're never serious?

I use IE almost all the time and it is very good, loads instantly on mine anyway, much faster than my other browser, Avant.

So there!

... I'm rarely serious. No smileys = so serious it's painful.

Perhaps if you wrote your sites using standards, they would display properly.

Ok so IE load quickly. That's because it has been pre-installed by M$ on windows machine. And like Suzanne pointed out, by writing valid code they will display properly. In the end you are allowed to only code for one browser and that may be fine for your site. Just as long as you realize that when you code someone else's website with this method and then their customers complain that the site displays incorrectly and they loose their business, the company might not come back to you for business. You can shrug this stuff off all you want but in the end you will be the one who falls behind. Why not go the extra mile now, learn how to code using standards, and then make it habit so that you are a better coder? I guess its your choice and it took me a long time to come around. I was sooooo ignorant about it. But you're a big boy so decide for yourself.

Yes and no. It does mean that there is a certain level of standards support across the board. That's good - we don't have to worry about support until we reach that level. At this point in time that may be acceptable (or not Wink), but will it still be acceptable six months from now? What about next year? What happens if you want to use something that the laggards don't support? There's always going to be one or two browsers at the bottom of the pack that hold us back. So do we accept the level that it's at now or do we continue to push for better and more consitent support? It's a never ending story Smiling

I think IE loses the plot when it comes to standards. I'd prefer to use Opera 7. Much faster and easier..
