Trying to utilize .htaccess
Hey,
I'm trying to use my .htaccess file to do two things.
The first,
I want to add style to my default apache-generated directories. I was able to accomplish this on a different server, adding a header.htm and footer.htm. But when i transfered my .htaccess over to a new Apache 2.2 server, it does not work.
The code for the server that it worked on is:
# -FrontPage-
IndexIgnore .htaccess */.??* *~ *# */HEADER* */README* */_vti*
<Limit GET POST>
order deny,allow
deny from all
allow from all
</Limit>
<Limit PUT DELETE>
order deny,allow
deny from all
</Limit>
AuthName www.foothillsbaptist.org
AuthUserFile /home/footh4/public_html/_vti_pvt/service.pwd
AuthGroupFile /home/footh4/public_html/_vti_pvt/service.grp
Options +Indexes
IndexOptions FancyIndexing SuppressDescription SuppressHTMLPreamble
HeaderName header.htm
ReadmeName footer.htm
IndexIgnore header.htm footer.htm .htaccess direclogo.gif
suPHP_ConfigPath /home/footh4/public_html
And the code for the new .htaccess is:
Options +Indexes
IndexOptions FancyIndexing SuppressDescription SuppressHTMLPreamble
HeaderName header.htm
ReadmeName footer.htm
IndexIgnore header.htm footer.htm .htaccess direclogo.gif
I noticed one difference between the two servers.. as the first (the one that worked) had this as default before i modified it:
The new default is:
Does anyone have any ideas for this one?
The second question,
I imagine this one is much simpler... but i want to change the settings so that the directory searches for index.htm and index.php as well as index.html when you enter an address like: http://localhost/forums/
Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

First the only thing I can think of is header.htm and footer.htm being different on the new server, that or there is an existing configuration difference in the httpd.conf file. You should read up on mod_dir in detail:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.0/mod/mod_autoindex.html
Second (and the order if important, first is priority):
DirectoryIndex index.html index.htm index.php

My guess is the .htaccess isn't being read at all... so i checked my httpd.conf. Here's the code:
#
# This is the main Apache HTTP server configuration file. It contains the
# configuration directives that give the server its instructions.
# See <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/> for detailed information.
# In particular, see
# <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/directives.html>
# for a discussion of each configuration directive.
#
# Do NOT simply read the instructions in here without understanding
# what they do. They're here only as hints or reminders. If you are unsure
# consult the online docs. You have been warned.
#
# Configuration and logfile names: If the filenames you specify for many
# of the server's control files begin with "/" (or "drive:/" for Win32), the
# server will use that explicit path. If the filenames do *not* begin
# with "/", the value of ServerRoot is prepended -- so "logs/foo.log"
# with ServerRoot set to "C:/Program Files/Apache Software Foundation/Apache2.2" will be interpreted by the
# server as "C:/Program Files/Apache Software Foundation/Apache2.2/logs/foo.log".
#
# NOTE: Where filenames are specified, you must use forward slashes
# instead of backslashes (e.g., "c:/apache" instead of "c:\apache").
# If a drive letter is omitted, the drive on which Apache.exe is located
# will be used by default. It is recommended that you always supply
# an explicit drive letter in absolute paths, however, to avoid
# confusion.
#
# ThreadsPerChild: constant number of worker threads in the server process
# MaxRequestsPerChild: maximum number of requests a server process serves
ThreadsPerChild 250
MaxRequestsPerChild 0
#
# ServerRoot: The top of the directory tree under which the server's
# configuration, error, and log files are kept.
#
# Do not add a slash at the end of the directory path. If you point
# ServerRoot at a non-local disk, be sure to point the LockFile directive
# at a local disk. If you wish to share the same ServerRoot for multiple
# httpd daemons, you will need to change at least LockFile and PidFile.
#
ServerRoot "C:/Program Files/Apache Software Foundation/Apache2.2"
#
# Listen: Allows you to bind Apache to specific IP addresses and/or
# ports, instead of the default. See also the <VirtualHost>
# directive.
#
# Change this to Listen on specific IP addresses as shown below to
# prevent Apache from glomming onto all bound IP addresses (0.0.0.0)
#
#Listen 12.34.56.78:80
Listen 80

#!c:/program files/perl/perl
# Note you _must_not_ indent the actual shebang line, and it must be the

#
# However, Apache on Windows allows either the Unix behavior above, or can

I read some of the apache manual you sent me... but most of it went right over my head.
If this makes any sense and you can help, i'd greatly appreciate it.
Thanks.

Ok, i answered one of my own questions.
I changed the httpd.conf in my /default directory as well, then restarted the server... and the .php/.htm portion now works.
