Hi

I don't know if this is the right section to put my q into but I'll start here anyway Smiling

I was wondering if anyone knew of any software out there that simulates the different resoultions and browser settings so when we're testing our sites, we can check it all out in one go instead of actually changing our own resolutions and having to install the different browsers to view the test versions of the sites?

Maybe I've been going about it the long way - but its worth an ask!

Hi Tania,

There are a number of tools / websites out there that can be used to test your site.

A few that I know of and have used -

An online article that covers the basics -
http://www.webmasterbase.com/article.php?aid=506
- includes link to http://www.w3c.org/

Testing your site (viewable in any browser)-
http://www.anybrowser.com/index.html

Online screen resolution tester -
http://www.echoecho.com/toolresizer.htm

Online Lynx viewer - http://www.delorie.com/web/lynxview.html
and check out the
Web Page Backward Compatibility Viewer
and
the Webpage Purifier on same website.

Testing your site for WebTV -
http://www.evolt.org/article/Testin...5409/index.html

Apparently you can download more than one version of Netscape, but only one version of IE. I also have Opera which is useful. Opera prides itself on being standards compliant - http://www.opera.com/support/mastering/webdesign/
and
http://www.opera.com/docs/specs/

Browser archives -
http://webdesign.about.com/cs/browserarchive/index.htm?once=true&
and
http://browsers.evolt.org/

Accessibility and Usability are two big issues in web design - there are many good sites out there to provide you with info. If you would like the links to these, just email me at [email protected].

Cheers,

Annette

The only program I've tried is something called Browserola which did not impress me at all. The best utility I've found for crossbrowser/crossplatform testing is this place Smiling

Another neat utility to add to the list is WebSpeed Optimizer (xat.com) which emulates various modem speeds. Handy if you are on a broadband connection.

A useful trick for testing screen resolutions is to type the following into your browser's location bar:

javascript:resizeTo(800,600)

Of course, you can change those numbers to whatever you want. Be sure to remember that the T in "To" is upper case - it won't work otherwise.

Edit: And of course there's no space in javascript - the board is putting that in automatically it seems.

Hey! That's pretty cool. I never knew that. Thanks

Actually, my video card's (Diamond) software includes a little systray utility that lets me change resolutions with a mouseclick but the javascript thing is still good to know

Thanx you've made my life so much easier...

I use Browersizer, from http://www.vasile.com/racecar/stampware/ (freeware)
you run it from your pc after you download it, and you are able to view your page in IE and/or Netscape with 4 screen sizes, web tv, 640x480, 800x600 and 1024x768.
