Site access issues? (not twf)
I'm currently having a few issues connecting to some of my websites.
I know they are active and DNS is propagated ok becasue I know other people around the globe can access them, and I can access them through a proxy.
Sometimes I can access them directly (no proxy) but most times cannot. "Address not found" in my browser.
The other weird thing is, when I can't connect to them with http (and at the same time cannot retrieve mail from the mail servers to my XP mail client) I CAN FTP.
Weird?
I phoned my isp, who of course told me to reset my hub/router and other poitnless tasks I had already tried several times.
An interesting point though, I can connect fine (http) if I use opendns's dns server ip's in my router. Is this possibly a dns issue with my ISP's private dns servers? My ISP is BT (British Telecom)
It's a weird issue, and wondered if anyone had any ideas to the possible cause.

Do the nameservers in your domain settings match the nameservers in your DNS records? Probably isn't the problem unless you changed them recently, but it's worth a check.

This is why I always set my home router to not only use my ISP's DNS, but also another DNS (I know the ones for a local university).
RoadRunner in our area a couple of years ago was having major problems with their DNS servers going up and down, so I started doing this. They would deny problems with it.
Here is a way to test: try browsing directly to the IP address for your domain (if you have a dedicated IP address for it), if you can browse to that but not to the domain name, then that is the culprit.
The issue with your FTP program may be that it just caches the IP address longer, so it still knew what IP address to use.

Unfortunately I don't have a direct IP to test it with.
I'm using a server in 7 server cluster, and apache/bind takes care of dns and other routing
Perhaps I could source some other DNS servers, it's just finding some that are private and not public, or at least trustable with my data

They do. But the reason I don't see this as a nameserver or DNS 'setting' issue is most other people around the globe (and myself with proxy) can access them fine.
Also, the fact (without a proxy) I can access them on and off, eg for 20 mins, then not for an hour or two then access them again for 10-20 mins, makes me believe it can't be a DNS issue, as this usually takes at least 12 hours for dns servers to pick up the changes.
It's weird that when I cannot access the servers though HTTP I can still access the servers with FTP.
