Yes, I would use your computer. It's cheap and the operating system you download will have password protection so I don't think you'll be hacked

LOL
Has to be the funniest thing I've read for a long time!
Get a host. Period. This isn't self promotion, it's common sense for the sake of a few bucks you get someone else to worry about, hackers, DoS attacks, patches, viruses, firewalls, speed, etc, etc, blah de blah...
It's really not worth it trying to do it from home...

??? it totally depends on what your site needs. There is no way your computer will generally be connected to the net fast enough to carry significant traffic. Hosting a domain name through your ISP on your DSL line generally is more expensive than purchasing hosting elsewhere.
It's is a risk for getting hacked, of course, but about the same as any server.

Get a host, most DSL services wont let you host a server, in the long run I think a host would be cheaper.

I would actually say no. I looked into this option - after setting up numerous servers on my pc, partitioning off and running linux under one half - the speed of the site was terrible.
To put it into perspective I put up a music file to download and asked someone with a 1mb broadband connection to download it - he got 7k per second.....
Its all due to the fact that my download speed was 1mb/s
My upload was 256k
now imagine 256 people all log onto my site at the same time - they get 1k each - hell thats slow. Take into account all the memory you would need to include - you are going to need hardware firewall for proper protection against hackers.
I just lease a dedicated server now, much less hassle and completely managaed for me.
