Thanks for all the info, but there is one problem I can't go third party I need a search engine that I run. Can you give me any tips on creating one and what all I need to do to make my pages searchable for the search. I am sorry that I wasn't more clear about what I was needing. I need it to just search my site on my server and that is it. It cant go out onto the web. I hope I am not being to vague I just got tossed into this job and am new to web design. any help on what it takes to create and run a search of my own web would be appreciated.

atomz.com
google.com also has a widget for searching only your page, as do most search engines, I think?

I give a thumbs up for atomz.com. It is very nice, fast, and extremely configurable. I use them for a college website I maintain.

I use atomz as well, but one thing to remember using these third parties, if you have desciptive links on a top navigation or left navigation, these will get picked up before any content will. ideally you want a right column navigation to get around this problem.

example, you have top and/or left nav, a couple of your links are called "download girl stuff" and "download boy stuff" or whatever and your site is 100 pages with same nav. Someone searchs for 'download', they will get everyone of those 'download ... stuff' links from throughout your site displayed in their search results.
Unless you use images for nav then your ok search side.

atomz is free and also sends out weekly log of searched words
