Random access to a website

What would cause random access to a website?

The website is up. Some customers can't access the site (they get "unable to locate" error). Some can only access via cable while others can't. Some can only access via dial-up; yet others can't. Some are able to get to the site with a wireless connection, other's can't.

The same customer can reach the website via dial-up, but not cable.

Some customers are worldwide. Some customers are in the same area with the same connection options and getting different results.

I'm totally baffled as to what might be going on. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
cbc

Can you give the URL to the site?

Is it your won server, is it hosted soemwhere?

If it is hosted somewhere, can the poeple that cant' reach the site hit the home page of the hosting company?

May be a bad DNS setting?

Have the person that can access it via one connection but not the other do a trace route from each connection.

If they are running windows, START->RUN enter CMD and press enter to bring up a command prompt.
enter tracert domain.com and press enter. Take note of the IP address it is trying to reach after "Tracing Route to domain.com".

Then do this while using the connection that doesn't work. See if they get the same IP for the site.

If this is a new site or you have recently changed servers it could be a propagation issue.
If this is the case it will work itself out within 24-48 hours.

Quality. Reliablility.
