Questions About phpbb
Has everyone heard about phpbb? I need to know some more about it and anyone who is familiar with the messageboard. I know it is free, for one, but you've got to have a server that supports PHP4 or something like that. You can find phpbb at phpbb.com Here are my questions:
1) How much space does phpbb take up?
2) How much space is needed for around 30,000 posts for a forum?
3) What about bandwidth? What is the recommended bandwidth for over 500 registered users??
I would GREATLY appreciate some answers to my questions!
Thanks,
Robby

Hi Robby,
We have used phpBB ourselves and we also install it for our users and they are very happy with it. However, your questions are really hard to answer...
1. The actual phpBB2 takes only a few MBs, but can be bigger if you allow avatal uploads and such.
2. How much space is needed for 30,000 posts depends on how big each post is.
3. Bandwith again depends on how frequent your visitors visit the forum and post, but if you get a host with mod_gzip, you shouldn't use that much.
Overall, I would say you'd be safe with around 100mb space and 4-5GB of monthly bandwidth (maybe even less).

I use phpBB and I love it. It's awesome. Like zollet, I can't realy answer those questions but I did want to add something that wasn't mentioned. phpBB requires php4, but it also requires a mySQL database. If your host doesn't support/supply that I'd find another host first. If you have other questions just go ahead and post them here, but you may also want to check out the phpBB support forums too.
P.S. Just be sure to
thoroughlycheck previous posts before asking becasue they're good over there, but they'll blast you if you're answer can be found by searching previous posts.KnightRobby posted this at 19:19 — 25th September 2002.

I knew my thread got placed somewhere. Sorry for the delayed responses everyone...hope you didn't mind.
I have found an excellent hosting company to host my phpbb board. I am definitely going to be experimenting with it, and I've heard that it is incredibly user-friendly, and in set up too
Generally, what would you all recommend in server space and monthly bandwidth for an active forum? Just throw your comments to me - I would appreciate it.
Again, thanks,
Robby

Again, there is no simple answer to your question. It all depends how active your board is.

PHPBB, the current version, will work with the following databases:
It does require PHP which can be installed on a Windows server if you are running SQL server.
