Question about tabbed browsing in Firefox

This is probably a dumb question but I just can't find the way to do it. I want all new windows to open as new tabs in Firefox (just using it for a CMS that doesn't work in O). Is there a setting for this somewhere? This includes shift-clicking links and target _blank links. Or is there an alternative to shift-click that opens them in a new tab? The hybrid windows/tabs thing is really annoying.

Thanks.

Tools->Options->Advanced->Tabbed Browsing. Is that what you're looking for?

Also, CTRL-click opens them in a new tab.

There's no option for links that open in a new window there though. What does "Select new tabs opened from links" mean?

Grrrr.... different keyboard shortcuts. Mad

when you click a link, instead of opening a window separately, it opens on same window via tabbed browsing...

Oh, you're wanting to open up links in a tab that would, by default, open up in a new window?

If it's not some JavaScript trickery, CTRL-click should work.

Yes, exactly. This hybrid separate windows/tabs thing in FF is really not making sense to me here! What's the point of having tabs if all pages don't use them? In Opera all windows - including pop-ups, open in a new tab. If you prefer, you can turn this off in the preferences, so it's either all tabs or all windows. Although I don't know why anyone would want separate windows!

Are you saying that in Opera, every single link opens up in a new tab? If so, I would hate that. I just use the tabs as a substitute for new windows. I rarely have sites that use some trickery that cannot be just opened in a new tab. Unless I'm misunderstanding what you're talking about, of course.

No, no, all new windows are new tabs. So anything set to open in a new window, all pop-up windows (as determined by pop-up preferences), all shift-click links open in new windows. Also, if you are looking at mail, newsfeeds, transfers, bookmark organizer etc. and open something from bookmarks it opens in a new tab.

So not all links! Of course not, that would be rediculous Smiling Sorry I wasn't clear!

Bah, naturally something that comes as standard in opera has to be loaded via an extension in Firefox. Laughing out loud

Load that into Firefox and check the preferences, should fix your problem.

As an Opera fan I came across exactly the same problem and also found it intensely annoying Smiling

So when you click on a link in, say, an email, you want it to open a new tab in Firefox instead of a new window?

If so, that's what I was talking about before. In Tools-> Options-> Advanced-> Tabbed Browsing, under "Open Links from Other Applications In," just pick "a new tab in the most recent window."

Or am I still misunderstanding?

Well what I think's being talked about is if you click a link that opens a new browser window it should open in an new tab, a link with a target attribute of _blank for instance.

An example would be to click the link to tandswebdesign in your signature, without that extension I don't think there's a way of making FF just open it in a tab.

Unless Megan is talking about something completely different of course! :D[/edit]

Oh, okay. I see now. Yeah, as far as I know, there's no built-in way to do that.

Yers, that's exactly what I'm talking about! I don't see why they would have tabs but still open links in new windows. Confused

Thanks for the extnesion link, Liam Smiling

New firefox question - why do I sometimes lose my right click menu?

Nevermind, that's probably just a conflict with the mouse gestures extension I have installed.

Heh, the answer was obvious to me as I'd come across the same deficency Vs. the beloved Opera Wink

Can't say I've ever had a problem with missing right-click menus though. Have you checked on the bug list for that extension?

Did you get your answer? I just right click on a link and click on 'open link in new tab'... Laughing out loud

Ugh, this pop-up thing is really annoying. Seems that FF won't let you have unmaximized tabs (like O does). So if I have a pop-up in a tab it has to be maximized.

Oh yeah! I just tried also, it doesn't work Sad

Guess that explains why they went for the hybrid idea, so new windows can be opened at the size the web designer intended. Naturally one prefers Operas method Wink

I shouldn't have to do that though, that's my point. Everything should always open within the same window, in a tab. It doesn't make sense to me.

Was this mentioned already? You should middle click all the links (the scroller thing.) They will open in the same window but make another tab. It's still not automatic but it works.

Middle clicking on the tab closes them too Sticking out tongue
