Password protected user profiles

Hi all,

Iv reached a dead end as far as my basic programming skills go - i need to produce user profiles, similar to MSN, Yahoo etc where the user can log in (via username and password) and edit the information that general surfers can view.

Any help???

If you're looking to write something from scratch, I would suggest PHP, personally.
