Does anyone have any experience setting something like this up? I've got an RFP here to respond to and that is one of the elements on the features list. I don't have a clue where to begin.

The site platform is currently NT4 but I may be able to move that over to a Unix system which I'd be much more comfortable with.

Any suggestions?

You mean something like an IRC server?
or more like phpOpenChat?

beyond the phrase "Online chat capability" I really have no clue what they want exactly. Not being much of a "chatter" myself, I've very little experience with this stuff - I've never been in an IRC channel in my life. That PHP package looks interesting unless of couse I'm stuck with an NT server.

Basically, I'm looking for either a 3rd party package that I can bundle in or someone to farm it out to.

I've used: http://www.quickchat.org

You could also use phpMyChat: http://sourceforge.net/projects/phpmychat
