There are bunches of stuff depending on which server software that your server is running. V-bulletin which this site uses also has a free lite version. Check Hotscripts.com for other freebies.

vBulletin (not V-bulletin) has a lite version, but it is intended strictly for testing purposes before you buy a license. It is so people can see if vB will work on their server prior to purchasing it.

Free scripts:
phpbb.com
ikonboard.com

I've checked them all out and as far as the free ones go, I'd use YaBB Gold.......very scalable and customizable. Has all the features of Ultimate and VBulletin but it's free.

Store your member files in a non-web directory for added security.

You will need Perl5......their support site is incredible...it's forums based.

not sure of the URL but it has XNULL and YABB in the URL.

do a google search on YaBB
(Yet Another Bulletin Board)

to check out mine go to http://www.MusicVideoInsider.com and go to the Message Boards.

I just got done installing an Ikonboard. Very easy to set-up and very customizable. Stay away from version 3 and up, they are having major problems with all the bugs.

Not true, not true at all.

YaBB is a server resource hog. To the point some hosts won't even allow it. All the features it includes are cheap imitations of vB's - at best. You're not going to get the quality support, either, as you're not paying and there are no free lunches.

I've got no problem with people using YaBB, but don't go around saying it has everything that vBulletin does, because it doesn't. That's why vBulletin costs something - you are paying for quality, support, features, and stabability.

dude just speaking for myself......haven't had any issues with it......whenever i needed help it was there.....for me it works.....for you it doesn't......

the original questions was about free boards............thus my response......I personally think that of the free ones, it's best in my book........

you spent money for your VBulletin and are proud of it: good for you.

I had no budget and got the closest thing to it I could find.......when I have the budget VBulletin would probably be the one I'll buy.....over Ultimate that is. But why fix something that isn't broken. I'm staying with YaBB until I need VBulletin.

it's good to know that you have no problem with people using YaBB

geez

what's up with the flame?

I was not flaming, I was boldy expressing my opinion and stating fact. It is a fact numerous hosts have chosen to ban CGI-based forums like UBB and YaBB. It is a fact that you get what you pay for. You pay for some free, you are going to get lesser quality than when you pay for something. Those, my friend, are facts, not flame.

You know, this philosophy can't be applied everywhere... Can you honestly say that M$ produces better products than the Open Source world? I mean, there is a reason that *nix boxes have the biggest chunk of the server market (cost plays a part, but I aint never seen a *nix box with a blue screen).

I liked Ikonboard. simple to install. I forgot what version I installed. I had my freehosting hooked into it, so I hacked the hosting script a little to create a user for Ikonboard and everything was going ok until oneday(still dont know why) My board had no forums. I scrapped it then. Other then that I liked it.
