Need basic HTML editor

My current project has eclipsed the limits of Dreamweaver's rendering ability - making most of its WYSIWYG abilities effectively useless. And it's a resource hog so I need something cleaner. Simple HTML/text editor with colour coded tags and (ideally) keyboard shortcuts for HTML elements. I used to have a program like this years and years ago but I don't think they make it anymore.

I tried UltraEdit but that's just overkill - too much programming stuff I don't need and I couldn't get the syntax highglighting to work they way I wanted it too for the CSS.

Thanks for any suggestions.

What kind of hot keys you looking for, bold and underline tags?

this is what I use.

Features you might like...
- One button to preview (F12)
- Preview in any browser by changeing one little drop box.

I not sure if they still have the download for the free version on their website. They offer version 5 for free if you don't want to pay. I still have .exe file if you want it.

Keyboard shortcuts for most common HTML tags, and customizable. So divs, list items, paragraphs and headers etc. etc.

(and bold and underline should never be used anymore - they are obsolete!)

My preference when not using Zend Studio or DW: UltraEdit (ultraedit.com)

I actually just downloaded that one last night! It's going to take some getting used to but it seems to do what I need it to do (with only a few minor annoyances so far...)

Bja - I think it's okay so far. I haven't had much of a chance to get to know it yet

Ian - is Notepad++ different from regular notepad? Just making sure Smiling

Megan, which one are you talking about? Ultra-Edit or HTML-Kit? Confused

Notepad++ is a (free, multiplatform) open source text editor with syntax highlighting for lots of languages (including HTML, CSS, JS, PHP, ASP, XML and SQL), tabbed windows, brace/indent guideline highlighting and an advanced find/replace function. (It's got lots of other features, too, but those are the ones I mainly use).

HTML-Kit, sorry. Didn't like Ultra Edit - too much programming stuff I'll never use, and I didn't like the syntax highlighting.

Thanks, Ian, I'll check that out when I get a chance Smiling

HTML-Kit homepage for your convenience

http://www.chami.com/html-kit/

It supports the same things Notepad++ supports and more, like built in html-tidy engine, link to validations, supports plugins, tabbed interface, just check it out so that I dont sound like im promoting it or something... LOL!

I can also recommend HTML-Kit, have been using it for years and it's very good.

Unfortunately it went "commercial" a while ago and now a lot of the plugins can't be obtained without buying the full program. If you're just looking for syntax highlighting though you really can't beat it Smiling

Megan,

I have been using 1st Page 200 (1st Page 2006 coming soon) and have been using it for years. It is like HTML-KIT but easier to use. It has all the features that are needed to create a site. I create all my sites with it.

Check it out at: 1st Page 2000

Jabez - I tried First Page 2000 about .... oooh, probably 5 years ago when it was current. i thought it was a blatant rip of Homesite which I was a big fan of at the time.

I'd still like something simpler than that though. All that extra stuff is pretty much overkill for my needs. HTML-kit is okay but I'd still like something cleaner.

Wow, I used First Page 2000 for awhile way, way back. A new up to date version will be neat to play with.

Oh...Megan I use Edit Pad, an old version which is just a plain old text editor and nothing more, but I think it's evolved...a quick look tells about syntax coloring with the Pro version:
