Music on your website
:light: Do you feel that it is generally better to offer your site viewers the chance to turn background music off and on as desired? Or do you prefer to hide your controls and let the music stay on all the time. I usually do the second. I figure if they want to they can turn the volume down while viewing my site if they want it off. I was just wondering what other people usually do. Also, do you prefer to use wavs or mp3s. When using music on my sites I always include the comment "All copyrighted material on this page remains the property of the copyright holder." That way I don't feel guilty about using the music. That is also why I prefer to use wavs, because they are generally just short portions of a musical selection which is less likely to be considered copyright infringement.

your probubly getting sic of my opinions as i have posted in almost all of your posts, but i think that if the people dont like it they can just turn it down lol.....you could also just put a poll on your site to see what your vsitors think.

I don't mind you following me around. I like hearing what people think. It's good to have someone endorse the same opinions that I have! You're right, I could probably poll my customers. The thing is, in my opinion, polls are a little bit hoaky. It's almost like they are a fad among webmasters and web sites now. I'm not sure that they ever really accomplish anything, granted maybe a little interesting amusement is not a bad thing. I have found that a lot of polls are just THERE, and there is no way of getting the results. Maybe it's just a poll for the web masters interest, but it is interesting to know how many people agree with your point of view and it's nice to be able to get to the results easily.

Background music is one of the ten deadly sins of web design. Generally, you shouldn't force it on your users, but if you really have to you should at the very least give them the ability to turn it off.
I always have itunes running when I browse the web, and if music starts playing on your site at the same time it sounds dreadful. Usually, if I can't find a way to turn off the music within a couple of seconds I close the website down and never go back. The only reason you should ever play music would be if the site is about music (for instance I recently did a website for a music artist and we want people to hear his music).
When I have to put music on website I use flash controls such as wimpy button because it gives great flexibility across all platforms.
PS... your message won't give you any protection. Republishing an artists music without permission is copyright infringement and should they choose to sue you you would receive a hefty fine. Check out http://whatiscopyright.org/ for more info.

Nice updated pic, Andy!
I have to agree with Andy. Automatically playing music on a website is a big no-no. I include it on my list of the carnies of the web.
