Monetizing My Site
Hello all! I have just joined this forum. I have a website dedicated to programming resources that is just a few months old and rapidly gaining in popularity and visitor numbers. Sometime in the next few months I want to start monetizing the site. Rightly or wrongly I have decided that all content on the site should be completely free. This leaves me with only one possible revenue stream - advertising income.
I have several ideas but no experience. That is why I thought I would post this message and pick the brains of those more knowledgeable in this game. I have an aversion go going down the route of Google Ad Word ads and the like. My main concerns are
- Far too often I find that adword ads are wholly irrelevant - I don't want to irritate my viewers that way.
- I am catering to a highly technoliterate userbase - I doubt that they would click on such ads = no income for me
- I have a feeling that the only true winner with ad words is Google
This means I am considering selling my own advertising space. I would much appreiciate any tips and advice on just how I go about doing this. In particular
- Are there any guidelines I could use to decide on pricing?
- Apart from "Advertise with us" links on my site is there anything else I can do to make potential advertisers aware of the opportunity?

Hi Etna, welcome to the forums
I think you mean Adsense . You can filter the ads to show only relevant content to target your audience, so you may be able to weed out some of the rubbish. But if the audience is techo orientated, I am not sure how many clicks you will get if the ads are not really targeted.
If you do programming tutorials, your visitors will most likely be interested in hosting, domain names, website design templates etc... so finding a affiliate program that works for you might be a good idea as well (cj.com, tradedoubler.com, affiliatewindow.com)

Thanks for the tip re affiliate programs - I have run into that word, affiliate, often enough when browsing other sites but have never really asked myself what it meant.

Having checked out the sites you mentioned and understood how affiliate programs work, there is a question that occurs to me - would it a suitable route to selling my own advertising space be to start via the affiliate route and then move on to providing direct space?

Why not do both at the same time?

Monetizing your website is always a difficult task. some companys will pay and some not. been on the internet as a webmaster for 11 years now. and so far the only way i make good money is by using adsense, milnic media and paypopup, i usually combine those 3 and i make a decent amount of money. enough to pay my montly rent. the rest come from web developing
if you want more info about milnic check them out here:

if you want more info about paypopup go here:

paypopup can be a really good source of income if you alllow popups windows and banners in your site and you have most of your visitors from countrys like usa, canada and the UK. the down point of this is sometimes been to annoying for your visitors ( you can set this up to be 1 pop per session or 1 pop per day or week). but a good site will always be a good site.
if you want more info on adsense, go to google.com

Hi, this is the first time I hear someone telling that non relevant ads are being displayed after joining AdSense. You have full control over the ads displayed.
