Hi all, this is my first post here Smiling

We're looking for a MySpace/Friendster type web community package that has the following attributes:

* freeware, open source
* php and mysql compatible
* lots of plugins with an active developer community
* active user community for peer support
* reasonably easy to work with

We are currently looking at Dolphin by BoonEx. Has anyone here used this software? Any other packages we should look at?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Hi,

We are also thinking about using Dolphin to start our community. Do you already have any impressions about this software?

Regards,

Tedi

I have installed dolphine a couple of times, its ok however, you dont get the forum, and it played up a few times after installing. You may be lucky and its ok, all in all when it works its good, has a really good IM system.

I would go for the new release of phpizabi its a bit better and probably more secure. Hard to modify the template though and the admin is really complicated!

Actually these are exactly the same problems I had during the installation: the installation process was not completed (due to some privileges issues?) and the Orca forum is never displayed (just a blank page is loaded).

Phpzabi seems to be a an option but Dolphin interface looks really good...

The answer for the blank page displayed when accessing Orca: http://www.expertzzz.com/forumz/index.php?action=goto&topic_id=3491

The server I'm using to setup the test installation currentlly does not support XSL. I will try with a new one tomorrow.

After testing Dolphin Community builder for several days we found it VERY insecure. It is so easy to steal users passwords and get unauthorized access. Sad

My default answer for everything community is Drupal. It doesn't behave much like MySpace by default, but there are certainly enough modules to make it do whatever you want.

Or there's Mugshot, which is basically a FLOSS (Free/Libre Open Source Software) MySpace clone.

I would suggest drupal too for the same reasons as Jeeves, bugs are fairly non-existent and if there is one, fixes are as fast as the bug... Anyways, you can try it out and see for yourself...

Right now I'm trying Drupal (my first experience with this CMS). I have been working with Joomla for long time but I'm really willing to try new options. Joomla release plans are not really clear and Community Builder developement path is always changing.

I'm getting really good impressions from Drupal: very clear UI, frequent updates and user-friendly administration.

The bad point is that there are not so many community modules prebuilt but there is the possibility to construct the site with a piece of everthing. I'm reviewing all modules available at drupal.org.

Thanks!!!

Hmmm, that link I gave you was to just the 'community' modules. The main list is categorised: http://drupal.org/project/Modules or maybe Joomla just has more modules; couldn't say as I've never used it. Does it have more modules? I thought Drupals were pretty exhaustive. Smiling

Drupal is a great platform, very modular, but with a bit of a steep learning curve. Once you start thinking the Drupal way (taxonomy etc.) it all suddenly makes sense. The API documentation is good too: http://api.drupal.org and hacking the themage is also easy and fun. If you need to override Drupals functions, see the themeable functions page in the API documentation.

Thanks all for your suggestions. I have been playing with Drupal for some days and I really love it, but for this project I'm willing to incorporate a more community oriented CMS.

What about PHPizabi?
