Looking for ideas for new project...
Hi,
As most of you know, we do have a web hosting company. Before this, I used to work mainly as a web developer (HTML, Flash, PHP, Perl/CGI, MySQL, ASP, MS SQL, Javascript, Actionscript, etc). I always like to work on a project on the side, something that is fun to work on and if it can give income when it's complete, even better
I do have some projects I'm working on right now, but I want to start working on another one as well. Anyone got any ideas? We might even be interested in working with someone. I'm looking more into something that is for webmasters.
Right now I'm thinking maybe a tutorial site (used to own a very popular Flash resource site a few years ago) putting online some PHP, Perl tutorials or maybe a free script site...or..maybe a Flash game site.. I don't know.. These are just some ideas that are in the air so to speak.
Got any ideas?

I think any good back to basics, average and advanced tutorial sites would be popular, in any language (scripting) then again flash games are very popular (read: addictive).
flash games would probably get sent around/viewed more so could double as a little bit of advertising

Thanks Busy, we actually decided on a webmaster site. This way we can add whatever we'd like now and in the future that is related to webmasters (i.e. tutorials, articles, downloads, links, forum, etc). Just registed the domain ModernWebmaster.com, what do you think about that for a webmaster site?

sounds to me like you're trying to put TWF out of business, shame on you!

actually, as far as ideas. i've always been annoyed that javascript (and alot of other languages, including html) lack a comprehensive reference site. sure, there's alot of crap out there if you want to search, but take PHP as the shining example. The answer to nearly any php question can be found in seconds. Forgot the syntax to array_merge()? http://www.php.net/array_merge -- you have the answer as fast as you can type that in.
i'd love a similar reference for javascript (and css would be nice too)

ROB,
I don't think the site I have will be competing with TWF as I'm looking more into putting online a few simple scripts and tutorials and once we have enough visitors start a small community. I was even thinking maybe some of the members here might want to or already have written some articles I can publish there?
As for your idea about JavaScript reference, I'm not even close to good nor do I have the time to create such complete documentation. I'm more looking to start a simple site with a little quality content and add to it with time.
A few years ago when I was younger (18-19 years old) I started this Flash resource site that got very popular very fast. After only a few months we were receiving between 6-10,000 unique visitors every single day! Sold the site to Internet.com for lots of money, but my partner at the time (the guy that was hosting it) wasn't an honest nor a good man and took most of the money (my money) as I was very young and naive and trusting. I didn't care that much though since his life was all messed up and I felt bad for him and the kind of person I am, I don't put that much weight on money (it's just paper and it doesn't bring happiness).
Anyways, you didn't say what you thought about the domain name? Is it good, ok or does it suck?

The domain name and concept are great... but what defines a Modern Webmaster?
Do you have a logo or motto yet?

Aren't all webmasters modern? (In the sense that webmaster "technology" is still relatively new. Not talking about personality )
I have an idea that I was thinking of expanding on... but I don't think I can do it alone. I'll send ya a PM shortly.

We thought about modern more like a webmaster that is using the (somewhat) latest tools and is thinking modern. It has nothing to do with anyone's age.
Besides, women don't age more than 20 years. If you ask an older lady how old she is, she will tell you "I'm 20 years and 700 months"

The plural as it sounds more like a community rather than a single persons site.

I could see "Modern Webmaster" being a place that highly supports standards - sort of liek A List apart. There are many people out there who consider themselves "webmasters" but don't have a clue about xhtml, for example. or CSS layouts.
It would be a lot of work to keep on top of everything as it changes though.

I know, but we're hoping to be able to sponsor a few people to help us create a big community. For example, if you would like to run a XHTML section, we could either set you up at modernwebmasters.com/xhtml/ and you will be using our site design or if you'd like a stand alone site, we could set you up at xhtml.modernwebmasters.com and you can have your own design and everything.

"ModernWebmasters.com - "Master the language."
"ModernWebmasters.com - "Dont stop there, learn it all."
"ModernWebmasters.com - "What you don't know, we do."
"ModernWebmasters.com - "Only HTML will get you through life."
"ModernWebmasters.com - "Learn what they didn't teach you in school."
The above are just a few ideas I came up with then..

Thanks nuke, but I'm not sure if any of them really fits the site as we plan to start very small with just a few tutorials and free scripts and then add to the site as we grow. What do the rest of you guys think?
By the way, I put the logo and a little under development text online at http://www.modernwebmasters.com/ if you'd like to look.

Looks good, I like it.
The tagline you have is really very bland though - it could apply to any webmaster site. You should try to think of something more unique... Something along the lines of "Keeping you ahead of ..." going with the "modern" idea ... something about being up to date on the trends, or ahead of the trends, or the standards, or something like that .... just brainstorming here... that's the challenge we all face, right? Keeping up to date with what's going on in he industry...keeping our skills up to date... that would be a really good focus for the site.
You could just do "Keeping you ahead of the game", but that's not quite right.

"Your webmaster resource online" just doesn't sound right to me...
"Your online webmaster resource" sounds more proper.
As Megan (I think) mentioned, I'd expect that 'ModernWebmasters' is a site keeping up with the latest techs, so how about a simple tagline:
"On Top, Online."
:q:
Megan beat me to the reply... it's much the same thing except for the different tagline

Our message with the chosen domain name is more like "today's webmasters", like modern. But I don't want to give the site an image that takes a lot of time to keep updated always with the latest and newest tools. Just another webmaster site, but for like today's (today = modern) webmasters. We want to have HTML, XHTML, CSS, Javascript, PHP, MySQL, Flash, PhotoShop (and so on) tutorials. Basically the most common tools used by webmasters today. Also I want to start very slow as I only have limited time to work on the site. I think it can turn out to be very good though since I'm very picky with the content and only accept top quality. I'd rather have 5 good and easy to follow tutorials than 50 poor writen ones. We're also thinking about creating a few premade scripts for people to download. These should get pretty much traffic, don't you think?

Okay, so how about something like "Content for Today's Webmaster"? Anything would be better than "Your online webmaster resource".
Premade scripts should get lots of traffic if they're 1. good and 2. listed in the right places.

I lurk this board all the time, but thought I'd weigh in on this one...
First, let me say that you're focusing too much on the "Modern" part of this name. It's really difficult to find a good domain name that isn't already in use or being held hostage by resellers. So, I ask, was this a name you settled on because it was available? If so, forget about focusing on the word "modern". After all, once you are located by an aspiring webmaster, he's likely to check you out because you're a "webmaster" site, not because it's "modern". So concentrate on the "webmaster" part, perhaps.
Here are some tagline ideas:
"Web Fresh!"
Spin your web now...
Web-spinning Techniques for Today's Webmaster
Your Web-spinning Resource
Make like a Spider...Spin the(a) Web!
LOL! It's not easy to come up with a "fresh" tagline for a webmaster site these days, but please, if you like any of the above, be my guest!
I happen to think taglines are important to making your site identifiable and memorable. I use taglines on all of my sites. For instance, I have a newsmagazine site about Science & Technology and other mind-blowing stuff at AweQuest.com which carries the tagline "the Mind and Beyond...." and a history site at HistoryChronicles.com with the line "History Repeats Itself" and a family site AweQuest.net with the tag "A Friend of the Family" and finally, AncientPast.com with the tagline "The Website Primeval"... you get the picture.
In case you haven't thought about it, and to others who may be trying to come up with a catchy tagline, a dictionary and thesaurus can be very useful in finding synonyms which can then be adapted to form your tagline. Good luck!

You have to be careful that the tag line isn't corny though. IMO anything spider/web related with webmaster sites (or internet sites in general) are very very corny and old hat.

Or too generic. I think that's the problem with many of the ideas posted so far. The tagline should be something that makes your site unique - not something that could be applied to any site on the same subject.

why not go for a rotating slogan/tagline if its that important and noone can decide?
Personally I go straight for the content, if its good, site is good, if its bad, no tagline will save it.
dont get distracted from putting the wheels on the car, while selecting the color.
why not start with a few script ideas that we could make and contribute to the project?
