live feed broadcasting - the right programs?

Sorry if I misplaced this thread. Maybe it should have been on the backend scripting? Anyways mods, do what you will with this.

I'm looking to broadcast live feeds using a simple DV connection from my camcorder (for now). My I know how to accomplish this but the technique I know uses java applets and has a lame buffer time. I know that the Fox and ABC websites that are broadcasting videos without any buffer are prerecorded videos and i'm sure they've been converted to some special format. But still, there is no buffer and the quality is unbelievable.

Is there a way to get connected to an application like they are running. The closest thing I can find is what Yahoo! is using, Flash FLV. Any help at all would be appreciated.
