Latest Ticker
Hi Folks
Great to find such a top notch Bulletin Board during a casual search on the net.
Anyways, can anyone please recommend a high-quality ticker to use on my site for latest news from my Company?
Ideally something that looks pretty swanky yet will not look too out of date in a years time.
I was playing about with some DHTML scripts then noticed that none other than the Prestigious BBC Site still uses Java applets?
Any recommendations/advice much appreciated.
Cheers
Andrew

Sorry don't know if it makes any difference but I meant a "Scroller Script" (preferably Free) or something that will do the same thing.
Thanks

For a ticker, you'd probably want to use Java, interestingly. It would be less code. However, you might have some browser conflicts.

As for DHTML scrollers:

A quick look over the returned links shows some good prospects.

Thanks Suzanne.
Does anyone have any specific recommendations?

You can find some good tickers at DynamicDrive.com.

I'm sorry I don't -- but perhaps if you were more specific in your requirements, someone would be able to pinpoint on s/he has used that would suit your needs as well.

Suzanne I'm looking for a cross browser typing or fader/scroller.
I'm intending to display messages on a single horizontal line at the top of the homepage.
Many thanks
Andrew

Andrew, as I said, try DynamicDrive.com. I use them to provide headlines on my site: http://sports-central.org/other/extras/headlines.

Cheers for that MJames.
Dynamic Drive certainly seems to be one of the better DHTML sites but I've a few problems with their scripts (maybe I'm being too fussy?)
1 - As my script will be prominent at the top of my index all the ime, I'm after something that will not look too out of date in the future and favour the "Typewriter" style used by the BBC site http://news.bbc.co.uk/
(or perhaps fader style if available elsewhere?)
2 - Compatability with Netscape seems to be a problem, specifically older versions of the browser.
http://www.javascript-page.com/tickert.html
is a case in point.
3 -Unlike your own excellent site, I'm after something that doesn't require a text box.
Cheers
Andrew

I know you don't want to hear this, but the reason people aren't giving specific examples might be twofold -- one, your needs are still undefined (though getting more defined with each not-quite-right search or script submitted). Two, DHTML may not be the right tool for the job, since to meet cross-browser and cross-OS compatibility, it requires a lot of complex coding, and it might not be worth it for the little bit of text you need.
I would suggest a number of different things:
1. Consider a random news item or sequencer instead of a scrolling ticker type area. (Server-side, not client side)
2. Consider using a java applet or flash to do it (smaller file size, better results).
3. Further define your needs

Suzanne, thanks for the reply.
Apologies for not making myself as clear as I might have, but as a "Newbie" to this excellent site I am as you say catching on more with each subsequent post.
The Scroller is intended to promote specific Company-related events or advertise certain promotions on the site.
Thanks very much for the link to the script on DHTML Central I'll have a play and bear what you said re: Flash and Java Applets in mind.
If you can provide any pointers to simple (Free?) Flash text animators, I'd be in your debt.
Cheers, much appreciated

swishzone.com is a Flash application that is inexpensive, and creates Flash animations. But it doesn't have the power of Flash to connect to a database or text file. Java Applets can have text entered into them, but I don't use Java Applets, so I can't recommend any in particular.
Hopefully someone else can pitch in.
