Larger Company needing Chat/Board advice
Hello. I am the community manager for the online website babyzone.com we get over 400,000 hits a month (could be more now i haven't seen the last few months of reports) Anyway our biggest draw is our message boards and chat as well as our regional pages for parents.
We currently have eshare for boards/chats and well it SUCKS! The company has been taking over a few times as well. We are looking for something new and more up to date with great features. Does anyone have any recommendations. I've seen some on this board but I wasn't sure if with a bigger company there would be differing recommendations.
We do need the ability to have several hosts with permissions to delete/edit/copy or move posts. Have Main message boards but the ability to have sub boards off of those. Ban users from boards AND from chat. I would like something that is required them to enter a valid email addy to even get an account. as well as the user friendly issues like easy picture attaching, ability to edit their posts, have a signature, html use, smileys, subscribing to certain topics, email reply notifications and all that other wonderful stuff! For chat i'd like to have private messaging, buddy lists, the ability to make rooms that only certain groups are allowed to go into, the ability to make several chat rooms with varying topics and of course we need to be able to add hosts there as well with rights to banning people, the ability to make announcements throughout the chat and chat rooms about upcoming scheduled chats and so forth.
Edited: Forgot to say that if at all possible to have something that has both boards and chats on one system this would be ideal. That way we wouldn't have to have two seperate admins and support and such. Eshare does both our boards and chat now.

phpbb is a very good free forum, which i use, its easy to set up, and modification to suit your site is also quite simple, it has all the requirement you list except a sub board, but in their next version sub forums are being implemented, by hosts i take it you mean administrators, you can have more than one with phpbb.
If you want to purchase a board id say most people go for the one your looking at right now.

Am I correct though that neither one of these solutions have chat capabilities? Paying is no problem we paid for eshare and have no problems paying for something new as long as it works well.

I'm unsure what you mean by "several hosts with permissions to delete/edit/copy or move posts" and "need to be able to add hosts there as well with rights to banning people".
Do you just mean that you want to capability for more than one administrator account?
Or do you actually have more than one server which needs access to administer the forum software?
I would recommend Invision Power Board and vBulletin. As far as I know, you won't find a bbs (bulletin board system) & chat combo. You may, however, find hacks for a bbs that will allow you to integrate a 3rd party chat program.

If there is no answer on Google, then there is no question.

Although the other free boards (phpbb, invision, etc) are great, IMO vBulletin in the best choice for a popular site as it is the most complete and popular message board system. For chat I recommend DigiChat which I'm sure you will like.

No, I don't use either myself so I have no knowledge about that.

Ok, I did a search for "Digichat" on vbulletin.org (which is a vBulletin resource site) and came up with this -->> http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=55816
There are tons more hacks/solutions there, all you have to do is do a search.
