MS is going to start offering IE 8 as an (optional) automatic update starting over the next few weeks. More info here:

Might want to start checking your sites if you haven't already. Nice of them to be clear about how fast this rollout will be happening ("over time"? Thanks, that's useful). Love all the buzzwords on the install screen too Wink

nice

I also like the blatant error:

...users still running IE6 or IE7 on Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003, or Windows Server 2008 will get will get a notification through Automatic Update about IE8.

let's hope the application is written better than the announcement page Sticking out tongue

my question remains: will IE8 prevent use of IE7 on the same machine, as IE7 prevents installing IE6? (I am running IE7 with IE6 in a Virtual PC running XP)

I know about IE8's "IE7 compatibility mode" and reports have circulated that it's not exactly the same as IE7, of course.

I like IE8 ,because it is closer the W3C,in most of cases,IE8 &FF3 work together well. I am sick of dealing with IE compatibility issue.

Oh, there will stil be problems with compatibility! I'm not expecting that to go away. I imagine by the time IE 6 ever gets phased out entirely the other browsers will be far ahead again.

An immediate example? IE8 doesn't appear to support border-radius (sure, Opera doesn't either, but I'd expect them to get caught up a lot sooner... will have to check to see if they have it in their next release).

Question: is Compatibility view the same as IE7 view? In the beta of IE8 I had there was a big IE 7 button for switching back and forth but now that's gone...

Does IE8 support CSS3? I can't wait to be able to use -webkit-border-radius for my MS visitors.

Here's a summary from Microsoft:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc304082(VS.85).aspx

Not too many new additions, mostly compliance updates. And no border-radius. They do have some of their own properties with the -ms prefix (same idea as -webkit and -moz)

Here's are some compatibility tables with all the major browsers:

Microsoft will likely support some CSS 3 in the next version, due out by the end of the year. They also announced SVG support, which will give us a better way of making rounded corners. (At the moment, "border-radius" is implemented differently across those browsers that support it.)

Where did you get that from? I'm shocked that they would be supporting SVG since they've always been against that since it's a threat to silverlight (although I found one reference saying it would be supported in v. 9). I can't imagine that using SVG would be preferable to a properly supoorted border-radius.

IE8 is out now, not "due by the end of the year" - or are you talking about IE9? I'm a bit surprised that they're planning on having another new version done in 7 months...

Re. CSS3 support, i'm talking about IE 8.1. From Smashing Magazine I got this -

We weren’t able to find out when exactly Microsoft is going to release the first public beta of the new browser, but some sources from the developer’s team claim that it will happen this summer.

From a Wired Magazine report of a discussion with Microsoft experts:
Quote:
There is no official roadmap for IE9, but native SVG support is likely.

Microsoft already has its own version of SVG - VML. Using JavaScript to negotiate these two technologies lets you do rounded corners, vertical text, stretchy images, and a whole lot more besides. Admittedly a bit of overkill for rounded corners, though. Smiling

Read the comments on that - it's an April Fool's joke.

I would love IE8 to be rolled out to ALL IE6 users - hate IE6 having recently spent hours redoing submenus that worked in everything BUT ie6.

I no longer support ie6 in my work. I suggest you do the same.

I have been using IE8 and it is much more compatible than the other version, faster and with some additional features. It is also giving tough competition to other browser like Mozilla.
