IE 7 to be released SOON???
I've heard a few possible dates, both coming in the next week. If you check out the search results I liked one of the possible dates is October 18th, which is tomorrow. The other says "within the next two weeks" (dated October 12).
I'm not sure if this is when the update rollout would happen or if this would just be an official release of the browser and the update would come later (???) Ah, okay This MSDN post says that it will be a "few weeks" later.
So, it's time! Now, I wonder how long will it be until we can ditch IE 6....

Hallelujah - only a few months now and then we can stop having to use quite so many hacks in our code

Hate to be the one to burst your bubble but IE6 will be around for a while yet and the hacks will still be needed (as they are for IE5 and 5.5) and knowing MS there will be a whole new lot of hacks needed for IE7.
The best way around these hacks is to use Firefox or Opera

Are you talking about a different version then this one? http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=94e5bf41-2907-4415-8f72-da7c2c2ace09&displaylang=en
I'm not too happy is MS right now. I had to fix like 20 of my sites that have flash so when you visit with IE6 (with the latest updates) or IE7 you don't get a dumb dotted line around and applets or objects.

Yes, that's Release Candidate 1 - basically a almost-ready beta version. This will be the full release.
Since this is being rolled out as a critical update I don't expect it to take that long to phase out 6. I don't recall it taking that long to phase out 5.5 actually, although that (my memory) could be because 5.5 wasn't that much different from 6. And webmasters will be keen to get rid of it and I can imagine some sites will ditch support for 6 fairly soon. Keep an eye on your stats
I'm not thrilled with the standards support in 7 but it's certainly an improvement. Bring on max-width
ETA: I imagine you could use those conditional comments they have to serve different CSS to v.6. Then you could do what a lot of people did with NS 4 - just serve it very basic CSS, which works fine if your site is structured properly.

IE7 is even more bad than IE6.
It lacks support for standards and css 2.

I disagree. Even though i am a FF supporter, i must say that M$ has cleared a lot of issues with regards to standards support in this version of IE. Even in an early release which i used some time back, these things were quite apparent, even though the program itself was quite buggy at the time. Crashed my system 3 times before i uninstalled the darned thing.

Sounds like it's out today!

Now, how long until the critical upgrade??? Can't be long now
ETA: I hear November 1 for the update. Not sure how accurate that is (was in a digg comment). The rumored October 18th was only one day off.

if you used the beta before the offical launch then you were upgraded to final version about 2 months ago.

Sounds about right, although it's going to be staggered to conserve bandwidth.

Hey ! When i checked the reviews, there was a mixed response. Google in one of its news has mentioned that IE7 is good, but not great.
I 've brought some interesting article with me regarding the new features in IE7.

Funny how mine is the only negative review I've seen (not that I've been out looking or anything. "... it does not appear so radically different that you feel as though you need to relearn everything you've known about browsing the internet."??? Oookkaaaaayyyy... well, not quite but it's certainly different enough in "average people" land.

I too feel that IE7 is a slight improvement over the IE6. It has no comparisions with Mozilla FireFox 2. MFF and Opera has some unique features which can't be compared to IE. But i'm also disappointed with it as it does not support for standards and css 2. Hope it will be reviewed !
