.ico making programing

I am interested in making favicons for some of my sites. I remember reading about this back in the day and the only thing holding me back was having a program that can make .ico files. So are there any good free programs that can do this? I have adobe photoshop 6.0 if that helps.

As far as I know you need to have a specific program to let you save them as .ico

A search on Google found these ones

Question about IrfanView + icons-

Does it do transparency? The icons I tried all have white background areas and they show up white. Isn't the white supposed to be transparent? If that's not right, how should it be done? Confused

I always use MicroAngelo. It comes with a HUGE library of icons for inspiration Wink and it supports transparancy.

I ended up using IrfanView to make my favicon. I didn't feel like figuring out transparency so I just made square logos. If anyone figures out how though that would be greatly appreciated.

I don't think you can as it's IE that looks for a specific file which is favicon.ico

There is also a plugin for photoshop that allows you to save as .ico files.

use the link tag

<link rel="icon" type="image/png" href="./yourfavicon.png">
'

works in mozilla browsers, not sure about ie. ie has a crappy implementation anyway, you only ever see the icon if you bookmark the page and half the time even that doesn't work (at least in ie5)...

ALRIGHT!!! Look what I came across the other day http://www.telegraphics.com.au/sw/
You can make .ico files in photoshop that support transparency! Fairly simple install, just download, copy and paste into you plugins folder, for some reason photoshop took like a day and 3 restarts until it recognized the new plug in.

I use a small program called "Bitmap to Icon" by QTam. It works nicely. Smiling

... you CAN use paint, it think you have to save it as a .gif, then put favicon.ico in the filename bar, its that simple, if it doesnt work then try saving it as .bmp or something, but i know it works, i have done it before.

anyone can do any amount of work provided it isnt the work they are supposed to be doing.

jammin, that doesnt mean you created an icon - it means most likely that IE detected an invalid icon and attempted to determine the real type on it's own, and was successful.

no, it actually makes .ico files, i know because i have done it before, i even use the .ico files for things other than favicons, paint can do it.

i tried it again and it doesnt work with .gif, but i tried it as a 24-bit bmp,and it worked, not sure if other .bmp would work, but the file info says it is an icon file.
try it for yourself if you dont believe me.

But paint doesn't support transparency. I guess I still can't get the transparency thing to work with Photoshop either, but I haven't put much time into trying.

IME (and this was a long time ago but is probably still valid) it's pretty difficult to find a good icon making program for free - all the good ones cost money, and there aren't many alternatives. You'll probably have to go with what you've got.

I've used a few free programs and found the one I like was called GoldIcon. http://www.softpile.com/Desktop/Icons/Review_09013_index.html I haven't made an icon in a while but it's simple, free, and does transparency. Here's a simple "P" I made a while back.

But on the otherhand, now that somebody mentioned there's a photoshop plugin I can use I'm going to look into that a little more.
