How Does YouTube figure out the age and gender of viewers?
In the Insight pane, YouTube offers demographics:
How do they peg the viewer's age and gender?
I understand the location can be mapped to the IP, but this bewilders me...

Well, I know registered users provide their birth date, and I would assume probably a gender as well. Obviously, this would only be able to record the data for registered users though. That's probably enough for a good statistical generalization, anyhow.

Yeah it will have to be the registered users only. But I would "guess" ther are quite a "few" registered users .. enough for decent statistics anyway

That's interesting that there are more female users, and the most common age range is 45-54. I always stereotyped YouTube as being predominantly 18-25 year old males, but, no more. I think they would have to ask about gender in order to know for sure...but I don't know for sure since I've not registered an account before.

I am sure the demographics change depending on the video.
This video is about Faith the miracle dog, who was on Oprah, so the demographics are not that surprising.
