How did you learn web design?
Most of us come to places like this looking for information to fix a problem or to learn more ...
How did you learn/find out about HTML/Web design?
What did you search for when trying to learn more?
How did you find frontpage (if you use it)?
and any other insights into todays newbies.
Don't worry there is no test on friday am just curious if things change over the years.
Me, I discovered webpages when I was doing photography, a client wanted to post my pics on his webpage (made with frontpage), I had never been interested in websites before. I thought to myself, man that site sucks, I could do better. So I put my money where my thoughts were and designed myself a website - complete with animations, coloured backgrounds, comic sans text ... all the bad things lol. I had made a website in notepad that held together but wanted more, so I found websites I liked and looked at the source, trimmed it all down into sections and found out which bit did what and why. I probably did it all in the wrong order but a while later then I started looking for tutorials but all of them (well most) explained using capitals in tags, to me it looked wrong or ugly so kept coding in lowercase. Switching to XHTML wasn't a problem as i prided myself on clean code (back then, get lazy these days).
Back then validation was mentioned in one in ten tutorials, but bobby (508, wai ..) were around and mentioned a bit more. A lot of the tutorials were to advanced for a complete newbie even with the basic knowledge and all the minor ones were repeats of the very basic stuff.
I picked up php and css quite easily but javascript i could never get into, weird i know.

It was a part of my college syllabus. I enjoyed it actually, because it was my field of interest. I wanted to learn it.
And when you go to your field of interest, you really enjoy learning it.

Best way for a beginner to learn web design and Dreamweaver?
Several years ago I used to be into web design (back when it was basically just HTML) and I did a lot of the coding myself. It's a hobby I would like to get back into, no rush. I have noticed that things have significantly changed; CSS, Flash, XHTML, etc.
If you are a web designer in this day and age, how did you learn? I've seen the Lynda series out there, so that's an option. I would prefer to learn on my computer at home but I'm open to buy a nice book or two. I am just wondering what out there is effective and a good source of information for beginners, especially with using Dreamweaver. Like I said, I'd like ot combine the two in the same tutorial if possible.

I didn't learn web designing, but I want to learn it. I believe that tutorial sites are the best way to learn web designing because it saves a lot of time and money as we don't need to travel any place to attend the classes.

My experience with web design began some 10 years ago in high school. I went to the circle of interests related to the latest technologies, where I met the first html tags What was my joy when I saw your first website. Now, I'm not act so strongly in the creation of websites, the more I use the ready-made solutions and slightly modifies them for search engines. I moved out in the SEO industry.

Initially i started with html and css, and for that w3 helped me a lot. Than i improvise my programming skills by learning "C", C helped me to understand and write Javascripts. But the most important thing is practice, as much as you practice your designing skill will improvise.

I taught myself web design by getting a couple introduction to HTML books from the public library to familiarize myself with the basics. Once you get comfortable with creating basic pages, you can take the extra step to create dynamic pages.
A great tool is dreamweaver which gives you a GUI based system to create pages. You do not need to know HTML to use this. Dreamweaver also has an excellent tutorial which you can use. Get a decent web design book for reference.

I started learning from W3schools. When I was B.SC student then one of our web design teachers showed us some tutorials from W3schools. Then I learnt wordpress. However, I should admit that I am not a professional web designer. I don't have knowledge on CSS or Functions but I can modify a default wordpress, HTML theme.

I've been working as a prepress Graphic designer, ever since 1997-1998 ...after a couple of years nearly 2001, some friends of mine asked me to do a Logo design for their Website. Then I've been doing many Graphics for other Web designers ...and at one point, I asked my self, Why can't I do web design too? So in 2004 I started to learn HTMl ...later I attended IT academy ... and here I am today.

Learning web designing is not a tough but how to stay updated with each and everything about trends in market is issue. If you are not aware about trends then you couldn't be able to design that meet your customers requirements.

I learned HTML from a book. HTML 3.01, probably about 1997 or so. I was babysitting and didn't have access to a computer, so I literally wrote my first HTML page with notebook paper. Typed it up when I got home and it worked great.
