Usually when a hosting company co-locates/rents a server in a datacenter they get X GB of monthly transfer. Ff they want more than X GB of monthly transfer they will have to purchase more (costs money). Another reason is that the hosting company wants you to upgrade to a bigger package if your site grows and uses more resources (diskspace, CPU, memory, transfer, etc).
About UNLIMITED bandwidth and diskspace, this will only be possible when we discover UNLIMITED Internet lines and harddrives.

There is no such thing because someone has to pay for it. The reason many hosts offer unlimited however is because most people will never use the space provided to them.

The only way unlimited BW would be possible is to create an infinitley big pipe for the data to go through. Same with HDs excpet its not a pipe, its a disc.
