Great Forums You Have Here! I have a Question... (CMS)
Hello everybody,
I am relatively new here to TWF and I am excited to share in the discussions here. This looks like a great place and I have many questions relating to website design, so your advice and help would be greatly appreciated!
Here is my biggest question of all:
My brothers and I are planning on starting a website business. However, we need to learn more about a thing called the "Content Managment System" for our potential clients. A content management system allows for my clients to manage the content themselvs and update/add pages to their website on their own. The only problems is that we do not know how to do it exactly so it is easy for our clients to understand.
I've heard that you can download ready-to-use Content Management Systems, but I have not found any good ones.
What I want to do is the following:
I want to be able to have some type of online form and I want it to have the following fields:
[FORM BEGINNING>>>]
[FIELD>>>]Article Name:___________________
[FIELD>>>]Content For Article:__________________
[BUTTON>>>]SUBMIT BUTTON
[<<http://www.videogames.com update their content? I want to be able to do something like that, but on an easier and smaller scale.
Your advice and help is welcomed and greatly appreciated! Thanks!
Ryan

Hey Ryan
Mmy understanding is that the best of these involve PHP. You might try posting over on the server-side scripting board:

Administrator Hensler, for one, may be able to offer you some valuable guidance.
I'm sure there are ready-to-use systems, but if you're going to be selling sevices to clients, I think you should try to learn what you can about the relevant programming. Fortunately, PHP is supposed to be fairly straightforward, although I certainly don't have a mind for that sort of thing mmyself. :alien:

I would recomend you find or purchase a CMS (content management system). I'm developing something similar now, and they really are hard to create. Lots and lots of planning, lots of coding, lots of bugs, and lots of headaches.
The only CMS I've played with is PHP-Nuke. Each person has their own needs and expectations, so I recommend to read about what's out there and installed/test the ones that sound like the closest to what you need.

If there is no answer on Google, then there is no question.

No.... Greymatter is not supported anymore.
pmachine.com would be the best bet. With some fine-tuning, moveabletype.org is also an excellent light-weight CMS that does heavy duty.

Another good one is siteworkspro.com
I use it on my site (see articles link in sig).
If you buy a CMS, you'll have to pay for a seperate license for every website you run it on, which could end up costing a lot. You could pass this price on to your client, I suppose. But what if they want you to make some small changes? Then you're stumped!
However, if you learn the language and build one yourself you can charge your client for the CMS license as well as the design. You make a lot more money this way, which is the name of the game

WOW! Thanks for all of the replies everyone...you do not know how much this means to me, especially since I am planning on starting a business. You guys are geniuses.
I looked through all of the CMS that you all showed me, and I was certainly impressed with Site Works Pro! I mean, it is INCREDIBLE! And, by the way, Keith, you have an incredible website and thank you for showing that to me.
BUT, I have a REALLY important question for you Keith. I noticed that SiteWorksPro uses templates for the web design - how easy is it to create/edit your OWN template? I would like to create my own template because I do not like relying on a template-based designs, especially if the design has to meet the clients specific requirements (which is ALWAYS the case of course.) So, how easy is it to create you OWN template?
Thanks MMI, I'll be sure to post out there as well (btw, you have a great website too.)
LOL! Yeah, I know what you mean - I usually depend on downloadable FREE scripts when it comes to PHP. But, I know I should learn it myself...which I plan on doing soon, but when I find the time of course.
Thanks Mark for the advice - and thank you for those useful links as well. I checked out those website and there are A LOT of goodies there - really great stuff!
Thanks again everyone for the help, I really appreciate it!
