I didn't think my local library wouuld have a lot of good web design books but it turns out that they do! I did an online search for some of the titles I've been wanting to read for a long time and while not all of them came up (no Zeldman Sad ), quite a few did.

I love the library - it's like shopping, only free. You can go to the website, search for the books you want, and have them sent to your local branch when they become available. It's awesome. I ordered:

  • Web redesign 2.0 : workflow that works / by Kelly Goto & Emily Cotler
  • Designing Web-based training : how to teach anyone anything anywhere anytime / by William Horton
  • Cascading style sheets : the definitive guide / Eric A. Meyer
  • Don't make me think : a common sense approach to Web usability / Steve Krug (been wanting to read this for a long time!)
  • Customer-centered design : a new approach to Web usability /Kreta Chandler
  • Web copy that sells : the revolutionary formula for creating killer copy every time / Maria Veloso

Pretty good selection, eh? Of course, I'm never going to have time to read them all if they arrive at the same time Smiling Have you read any good web related books lately?

Excellent source of free reading!

Ooooh, cool! They have Meyer, that's good enough!

The nearest thing to a web design book I've read recently was "XML in a nutshell" (one of those O'Reilly books). Very good, but a little hard on the brain Smiling

Thanks for the tip Megan, will have to go and badger the local library to see what they have!

I think the last web book I picked up is the Zen Garden book, but I've not yet had enough time to read it. The wife and I are moving today and tomorrow, and that tends to eat up time. Smiling

Nielson? Really - it has been a couple years since I read that book but I remember it had some great usability theories in it...

Maybe, but ugh, that guy has an ego problem! I remember reading a year end column once where he attempted to prove that since 80% of web designers hadn't read his column then therefore 80% of web sites had those same usability problems Roll eyes Haven't read anything of his since.

ETA: Of course, now I can't find it! Maybe it never existed in the first place

Designing with Web Standards by Jeffrey Zeldman, now that's one that they should have! I put in an official request so hopefully they'll get it. (Of course I should really just bite the bullet and buy some of these! Web design books can be so expensive.)

While looking for that article, I found this:

Jakob Nielsen Declares the Letter "C" Unusable Laughing out loud

... guess he did go a bit overboard. I remember when it was him and one other guy as the main Web design "authorities"... I think this was/is his washed up other half: WebSitesThatSuck.com Cool

I think he pretty much declared himself to be a "guru" too. Roll eyes That's annoying.

When I was in USA I found a couple of libraries have shops, they were selling some older books, I managed to buy several on C\C++, vrml (not sure why), CSS, JSS (netscape css) and others, sadly my eyes were to big for my suitcase and had to leave most of them there. They were only 10-50 cents each depending on the condition of the covers

Jakob Nielsen is an idiot. Who, in their right mind, comes up with an idea that the letter C is "Unusable." He would place on my top ten list of stupid people.

I just had to say that.

Anyway, I never thought about checking the library for web development books. I'll check it out this weekend and see what's up. Thanks for the inspiration Megan.

Well, some of the books came in.

Redsign 2.0 looks really good. There's even inserts by Zeldman, Eric Meyer, Lynda Weinman and some other big names !! Really good outline for the design process including a lot of business planning and project mangment that designers probably don't think about enough. Anyone who does serious web design projects should see this book.

The writing one is terrible. All marketing shpeak. I hate that crap.

The training one I just got because it relates to what I do at work. It's really old though so doesn't seem to have much useful information (copyrighted 2000, but the screenshots look more 1998).

The Eric Meyer CSS is more of a reference book (from O'Reilly). I'm not sure if I'll pick through this or not. I'm sure there's lots of good stuff to learn sprinkled through all the stuff I already know. I think all web designers should own a book like this. I think the Eric Meyer on CSS would be more interesting.... I should go add this stuff to my Amazon wish list while I'm thinking of it.

What do you recommend for someone wanting to learn CSS from the ground all the way up? Starting with basics and then ending with all the advanced tricks...

Cascading style sheets : the definitive guide looks really good. Eric Meyer is one of the top CSS gurus out there so I don't think you can go wrong with his books.
