cuteftp allows you to chmod files and isn't too expensive either

I usually just use the default FTP program on Linux or WIndows systems. If you have to use one, WS_FTP is free, low-resource intensive and works pretty well. Nearly all FTP programs give you the ability to chmod since this is a basic function built into FTP.

I think CuteFTP is the best.

I use WS_FTP LE. It is free and gets the job done.

I'm a WS_FTP user as well. If you manage a number of sites, the paid Pro version is well worth it for it's Windows Explorer integration.
I tend to work in Explorer quite a bit and it effectively adds all your ftp sites in a "Network Neighbourhood" sort of fashion.
On the other hand, the last few versions of HomeSite have included similar functionality with built in Macromedia FTP software which makes WS_FTP somewhat redundant - but I'm a creature of habit

I've been using WS-FTP since the start. I don't think there's much of a difference in terms of which is best - the basic functionality is always the same and after that most people don't need many extra features (besides chmod, which I thought was pretty standard but I guess not...)

That's always a bummer, especially if you use it lots during the trail and really get to like it! I would imagine that the WS_FTP one is similar and by the sounds of it free.

I've never tried CuteFTP but I always thought that *it* was free. Technically, WS_FTP is not free. The LE edition is for evaluation and personal use only.

I also use WS_FTP_LE. It's also for educational purposes, as well as for evaluation and personal use.
Personally, I don't care how a program looks, or what fancy things it can do, as long as I can upload/download files. That's really all I expect from a normal FTP client.
I don't suffer from insanity. I enjoy every second of it.

If it's for personal use, which most of us use it for, I would say it *it* is free, then!
I also use WS_FTP ... from the start. Does anyone know if they will ever release new versions of it? I'd love if it got a new interface, or just one that is more modern.

I use cuteftp and wsftp_le, only downside of using the two is if you upload in wsftp_le the files are unseen by cuteftp sometimes
both get my vote thou - but stick to one
