Here are five key SEO services to look for when hiring an SEO company. ... Platinum Author | 5 Articles ... SEO Services You Can't Live Without ... feedback, keyword research tools, competitor analysis, social media and so on.
I'm going to take a broader approach to this, simply because there are some tools I could live without, but only if I had a reasonable substitute (ie. I could live without Photoshop but only if I had PSP).
1. Hosting and viewing essentials - a good host, FTP, browser, e-mail, etc.
2. Homesite or reasonable substitute - must have colour coded tags, customizable keyboard shortcuts for common tags, image insertion capability (that adds height & width attributes automatically), powerful search/replace function...
2. Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro plus image optimization software if not already included
3. Various extra browsers for testing purposes
4. Site stat service/software (I use Webtrends and Hitbox... will post another thread about this)
5. One of Flash, Fireworks, or Illustrator - can't decide which one would be more important - definitely need some sort of vector tool though.
Feel like I'm forgetting something important but oh well...
1) Internet Explorer and Netscape. Can’t get business without the net.
2) Microsoft Outlook. Have to keep in contact with clients.
3) Telnet, SSH, and FTP software.
4) PhotoShop
5) DreamWeaver
Peter J. Boettcher posted this at 12:29 — 12th June 2001.
1) IE (I'd be quite content without Netscrape)
2) Outlook
3) Visual Studio 6.0
4) An artist (I can't draw crooked stick figures, so I get my bro or cousin do that work for me)
5) Telnet, SSH, FTP (for servers that dont work with M$ InterDev)
6) ICQ (I'm a social creature)
7) Half-Life, Counter-Strike (for those stressful moments when you just need to kill something)

Interesting responses. It's no fair either that Mark got to post 7.
1.)IE (Netscrape, Opera)
2.)Photoshop 6.0
3.)Homesite 4.5
4.)Excel - used to build csv files to import into mysql.
5.)grep - can do most anything with this tool that is built into Linux.
Mark Irving I have a mind like a steel trap; it is rusty and illegal in 47 states
The basic which I use for webpage designing and the rest from experience to come up with a good design.
1)HTML Editor - Used it since iearning to code.
2)PSP - Easy to use. Still can't master Photoshop.
3)Zara - 3d graphics/animation
4)Gifcon32 - Free animation
5)NS & IE - For testing
Okay folks, This is what I did using the above tools for a customer http://www.lasertecsales.com. in just under 2 hours.
Besides I keep a collection of common CGI/Perl scripts that I use for my clients in case they need it.
sounds like the question of the greatest invention in mankind. i think no one of us webbies can live without a browser? like no one can live without a wheel nowadays...
anyway, here are my favourites:
1. homesite 4.0 (do i have to update to 4.5?)
2. ftp_explorer
3. microsoft outlook

interesting thread... might as well post my five best picks!
for me that would be the following :
1. IE - for browsing my fave websites / checking web-based mails
2. Anti-Virus sofware - for protection
3. Notepad - for jotting down very important notes, very handy for me
4. ICQ - for keeping connected with clients / contacts
5. Calculator - for making rough estimates on revenues and forecasts I would make, lols
Can I skip the obvious - ISP, Web Hosting, Browsers?
Design & Maintenance:
1/ HomeSite
2/ Adobe Photoshop/Imagestyler (I'm cheating here )
3/ Ulead SmartSaver Pro
4/ WS_FTP Pro (gotta love that explorer integration)
5/ WebTrends Log Analyzer
If not limited to 5 I'd add:
6/ Dreamweaver (use it on rare occasions)
7/ Linkbot Pro (nice for link validation on those large sites)
8/ WebSpeed Optimizer - a nifty little tool for simulating various modem speeds
9/ ClipMate - a copy/cut/paste buffer utility that I have become so reliant on, I don't know how I'd live without it (ok, a little melodramatic but the tool rocks!)
Running the business:
1/ Office 2K Pro (how's that for 5 or 6 in one!)
2/ Outlook (I know it's part of Office but is so integral to my day-to-day operations that it deserves its own slot)
3/ Accounting Software
4/ Project 2K (yah, I wish! I'd love to be using this if it wasn't sooo expensive! I miss my time-limited demo)
5/ Tax Software
1) SciTE - you need a decent editor
2) WML - somehow all your templates have to get together
3) the Gimp - pictures make things look better
4) rsync - how else could you update all your sites without much hassle
5) hmmmm ....
Who needs a browser. If you've done this long enough you know what it will look like
I think things like a shell (bash), an email-client (mutt), an IRC client (bitchx) and a window manager (enlightenment) are essentials that are on any system anyway.
weblint can't hurt either.
imagemagick helps sometimes.
maybe curl, if you stupid provider kills the rsyncd.
ispell, if you can't tzpe
1. Microsoft Image Composer
2. FrontPage 2000 (Although sometimes I'm ready to kill the people who programmed it.)
3. Browsers
4. Paint (Yes, I actually use paint to do web pages)
5. CuteFTP
All of my web sites have been made usuing only these programs.
1.) Dreamweaver UltraDev 4
2.) Fireworks (the best image utility around)
3.) Counterstrike (A must for any web designer)
4.) Diablo 2 (All descent webmasters have this)
5.) Beer holder (old 4x cd-rom drive)

Personally i cant live without 3,4 or 5. Neo

It's good to see that this forum has attracted a decent calibre of participants. I have noticed a distinct lack of people using FrontPage, and THAT'S encouraging!
This thread (Tools you can't live without) has proven that, if you're serious, you DON'T use FrontPage.
I have checked out some of the tools people have suggested and certainly expanded my toolbox.
Thanks guys and gals.

well i'll tell you why we dont use frontpage, cos its a piece of crap. Dreamweaver ultra dev 4 is much much better and long live the 4x cd-rom drive beer holder. ahhhhh nothin like an ice cold coopers.
By the way MESS WITH THE BEST, DIE LIKE THE REST
"5. SSH" - Good to see that at least some windos users decide to drop telnet. The sooner telnet dies the better.
"1. IE - the soon netscape dies the better!" - Oh yes, I see. If we only have one browser left it's quality will increase ... aehm.
I'm stuck with one box at work that has IE installed and I don't have Adminstrator rights, so I can't install a browser. What do I do ? I ssh into my AIX box and use lynx. IE is simply unusable.
(For the pros: How do I make IE open new windows ("open link in new window ...") at full-size ?)
Ghostface posted this at 17:51 — 16th September 2001.
1. Linux (I can live with windows, well...sort of)
2. Apache (Keep site running)
3. Perl (Keep the Bizz running)
4. .htacces (Protect the bizz)
5. HomeSite
6. libwww (a other browser)
different thing are important to different people just as differet things work for different people. Here are my most important resources:
1. My website----without it I am just a watcher <>
2. Adwizard------could never manage posting at all the site I post at without it
3. CoolPage------makes it super easy to create webpages(for free)
4. Free classified sites-------this is where al my traffic comes from
5. People like you that are willing to offer adviceand constructive critisism
1) konqueror (handles, ftp, sftp, fish (ssh file system), etc.)
2) kate (colored syntax, auto completion, etc.), conects to konqueror and so can open any file over all those protocols
3) firefox w/ web developer and other extensions
4) gimp!
5) thunderbird for email
leslielauren posted this at 21:42 — 15th February 2002.
Hmmm... only five? well, I'll just have to cheat...
1. Browsers (if limited to one I would pick Netscape. If it works in Netscape it generally works in IE. The vicey-versa of that statement sure aint true).
2. Homesite & Ultradeit to do me editing. If stuck with one I would take ultraedit for the scripting power and integration with UNIX.
3. Corel Graphics Suite (Draw & Photopaint plus their handy dandy trace and screen capture utilities).
4. Apache with perl, php, and mySQL, and whatever other mods I feel like loading. In fact, open source software in general.
5. puTTY for secure telnet and a secure FTP client (still looking for a good one)
korndragon posted this at 22:22 — 23rd March 2002.
1. Browsers (IE, Netscape, and Opra) - Gotta test it.
2. HTML editor (HTML Kit) - Gotta code it.
3. Image app. (Ulead PhotoImpact 6) - Gotta make it look nice.
4. FTP access (WS_FTP95 LE) - Gotta have host access.
5. Full high level test bed (Apache, PHP, MySQL, Perl) - Gotta code high dollar complicated sites with dynamic capabilities.
I can't live without Flash now for lots of reasons, but since I have before, and I'm only alowed 5, I won't include it.
Hey gang, don't make false assumptions - he didn't say only 5
[=1]
Windows 2000
Eudora
Coffee
IE + RoboForm [great form filler]
DreamWeaver
EditPlus
Online forums & tutorials
Samsung laser printer
AllWebMenus [drop-down, fly-out menus]
Style Master & Layout Master [CSS]
Visibone [code visual aids]
Excel
PSP [not 'good' enough for PS :)]
Norton SystemWorks
[*]TaskPlus [PIM]
[/=1]
In addition, my partner Linda also uses:
[=a]
PhotoShop
[*]Flash
[/=a]
Found your 5? Anyway, all those are important to our job as web builders. Only starting to use the CSS & menu tools, assume they will be staple tools.[/]
1. Flash MX
2. Illustrator 10
3. Photoshop 7
4. Dreamweaver 4/MX Preview
5. tie between BBedit, Suitcase 10, and a good ol' fashioned paper sketchbook and a Pilot Razor Point pen.
Of course, I run all the above exclusively in Mac OS X. even the sketchbook and the pen. =)
1. Ulead PhotoImpact (love this programm)
2. AceHTML and WC_FTP
3. Browsers - Opera for surfing, others (IE, Nestcape) for testing.
4. TreePad and The Font Thing
5. Terragen.
I love freeware, and the ability to do business on the web without spending more than we have to. So with that in mind, here are my freeware top picks...
1) Unix shell access.
2) The services of Spamcop ( http://spamcop.net )
3) Photoshop (I have v6, with v7 upgrade on order)
4) A good HTML editor system. I use Dreamweaver MX these days, but I still have and use Arachnophila, which has a zillion extras to make managing a site easier.
5) Some sort of good backup system (tape drive, CD burner, etc.) for making backups of irreplacable files.
I also might include Norton Utilities in that list, actually, but I think having backups is probably a bit more important than having Norton. You can't exactly "Restore from Norton" although you can sometimes use Norton to restore some things.
1) Dreamweaver - perfectly content with 4, but would prefer MX
2) Photoshop 7 - Too Used to it
3) AIM/MSN - I would prefer both but I suppose it depeneds what situation I was in, alot of VERY good and helpful friends are on there.
4)IE
5) SmartFTP - BEST FTP prog in the world

Katie_Venra posted this at 18:42 — 4th September 2002.
hmm...
1. first page 2000, the best editor out there.
2. a good ftp
3. anyone you can trick into doing half the work
4. a mild case of insomnia or lacking that, a 12 pack of anything with caffeine.
5. a small stash of money to buy new equipment after you break your old stuff discovering the problem you have spent weeks trying to fix is actually just a misplaced parenthesis.
anyone can do any amount of work provided it isnt the work they are supposed to be doing.
(1) Textpad - It just dominates, clean interface, fast loading, and it can grow in complexity as you learn how to use it better.
(2) Photoshop - Nuff Said
(3) Benthic - To absolutely dominate Oracle Queries & Databases
(4) Advanced Query Tool - To absolutely manage and be on top of the SQL Server.
(5) SQL Server Enterprise Manager - The more I learn about this kludgy but mega-powerful tool, the more I love it.
(6) Phoenix - An off-breed of mozilla that has a preferences toolbar that allows easy turning off of javascript, colors, fonts, images. A must for browser testing.
(7) EyeDropper - a quick n easy system tray tool to grab rgb/cmyk/hex color codes from anything.
( Screen Ruler - To help measure horizontally or vertically any screen's height and width.
(9) IRFanView - The absolute best image viewer and manipulator, for quick and easy multimedia viewing as well.
(10) Trillian - for Universal Chatting.
(11) POW from Analogx.com - The absolute best and easiest Popup Killer.
(12) FTP Commander - an extremely easy to use, clean interface, that let's me do the ftping in and out, very fast.
(13) CSE HTML Validator - What can I say?
(14) NameWiz - For easy Batch Renaming of Files. Especially good for renaming digital photos.
(15) Paraben's Flow Charter - A very easy to use flow-charting system, to help us coders/developers logically develop our applications.
That's about it for me.
Integrity can NOT be bought

1. Photoshop - Gots to have a great looking page!
2. Frontpage - I'm a FP newb, but It's good enough for my HTML needs, hardcode the rest.
3. ftpACE! or WS_FTP
4. IE
5. Invision Board - best free forum software.
Uh I use FrontPage. I'm proud of it. Nothing wrong with Frontpage, it's just a tool like anything else with. Why do I use FrontPage, because it's comfortable for ME enough said.....
Long thread - but I can see why. I'll leave out OS and browser stuff since you must have that to be "here". I'll skip the text editor stuff too, everyone has their fav.
1. HTML editor: Dreamweaver
2. FTP: WS_FTP
3. Graphics: PSP (I have Photoshop, and use it when I have too, but PSP is quick and dirty for me.)
4. Flash: Swish, I have macromedia, but still on a learning curve for that.
5. SoThink DHTML
and I really do need to add the sixth:
Topstyle for CSS
Leaving out all the browsers since its obvious that I use all the major ones for testing. Could live without all of them but Mozilla!
Anyways:
* Notepad
* Photoshop
* LeechFTP
* Php.net
* Devshed.com
That's all. What more could one ask from life?

I don't know why I never answered this thread before but...
1. EditPad (thanks to a WMF suggestion. It kicks notepad's a$$.)
2. Photoshop
3. Webmaster-Forums.net (followed by a few php specific forums)
4. WS_FTP (CuteFTP is okay too)
5. IE
(I've got Dreamweaver and I can't stand it! Straight coding all the way, baby.)
1) psp (so much cheaper than photo shop)
2) EditPlus (layout's for the languages I use not just html)
3) cuteFtp
4) IE,NN,Oprea (gotta test)
5) Swish and Anfy (don't know flash and not enough time for the applets)
Abhishek Reddy posted this at 04:29 — 2nd July 2003.
As well as a host of other KDE software (including KDE itself) - Kdict, KOrganizer, etc. And of course OpenOffice. And other recreational apps/games - XMMS, Tux Racer, Chromium.
Wow, what a great thread...Here're my most useful:
1. PhotoShop
2. Dreamweaver
3. MySQLCC - Great tool for admin of MySQL databases
4. Notepad - Always handy!
5. IE - Opera - Nutscrape - Need the lot for testing, my preference as a browser is Opera
When I look at Abhishek Reddy's list it brings back that almost overwelming desire to move over to Linux...How I wish that were possible!
I'm going to update mine now, since the last time I answered this was two years ago!
1. Dreamweaver MX (I didn't even have that on my first list and now it's no.1! The rest are in no particular order)
2. Good graphics program (preferably Photoshop, but PSP would do)
2. Browsers (Opera 7 as primary browser, then Moz, IE, NS7 etc.)
3. Good hosting, ftp etc.
4. Flash
5. I guess it's good to have a basic text editor so I'll put TextPad in there. I was also going to put stock images in here...
That's for personal projects which I don't do much of anymore. Here's what I use at work:
1. Flash MX
2. Dreamweaver MX
3. CoolEdit, Xing MPEG encoder
4. Lots of stock images & clip art
5. Browsers, e-mail, MS Office etc.
i don't feel like reading ALL 7 pages right now. read the first two. here's my list....
1: a browser to make sure my code is working.
i've noticed a lot of people saying IE. personally there are two reasons i do NOT like ie. one is that there are a number of things they do that purposely don't conform to w3c because M$ feels they should be making the standards. the other is the security holes are never truely fixed, only the way to access them get changed.
i don't care for post aol buy out netscape. the feel changed too much. (i use mozilla and ie.... my mozilla uses the classic theme) i like mozilla best because if you're using the nightlies, then any issues are fixed BEFORE they can be made public. but i normally use the last or second to last stable (i grab every other update unless it's a major security thing causing the update)
2: an editor.
personally i don't care for ones like frontpage, visual studio, etc that try to write your code and add it's own junk.
this is why i use Xemacs and Emacs. unlike the othersit's also not language specific. it's got every programming, scripting and markup language i know of as a language it handles. for those that want a debugger, they both have one of those embedded. for languages that need compiling, they both have the GNU Compiler Collection (GCC), which is touted as one of the best C and C++ compilers, as well as being great with java (basically a variation of the one sun puts out, it's got slightly more relevant commenting. the Java compiler in the gcc is actually dcontributed BY sun, one of th companies that works with the FSF). if you use notepad, then you seriously need to get something else. try going to http://www.xemacs.org or http://www.gnu.org (search for emacs) and get the version for your platform. they both have winblows ports.
3: ssh/ftp over ssl
let's face it. leaving telnet and regular ftp open is fast becoming a security no-no. there's a list of programs that handle one or both of these here: http://diane.undergrad.brandeis.edu/ my preference on winblows is the first winblows one listed. on posix i just the the command shell. ssh is actually in most current posix oses (ssh user@server)
4: the place that keeps tha language used, google and boards like this
we all need some reference or help at times. when whether double checking something works the way we expect (where it comes from if a function) or looking to see if a problem's been tackled (ggogle or a specific board's search) or simply looking for current feelings on the best way to handle an issue (or solve it) these three things together are a must
5: tbd
------
things that are realllllllly good to have:
1: a partner. otherwise when you get "too close" tot he code you'll end up using a board like this as one when you look in the wrong place and/or overlook the place where the error is expecting it to be elsewhere.
POSIX. because a stable os that doesn't have memory leaks and isn't buggy is always good.
Tools for designing sites, ok it's more than 5, but these are what I use often:
1) UltraEdit (great text editor!)
2) Macromedia Studio
3) CuteFTP
4) Ulead PhotoImpact & SmartSaver Pro
5) Corel Draw Suite (Mainly just use it for vector drawing now that I'm getting more used to photo impact and fireworks)
6) VanDyke's CRT for telnet
7) Adobe Acrobat (not just the reader)
I have Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, but have been using Corel Draw since 96, and just know Corel too well to easily switch tools. (Same reason I mainly use Word Perfect over Word

I split my choices into development and server-side...
On the server:
1. Windows 2000/2003 Advanced Server
2. IIS 6 with FrontPage Server Extensions and .NET Framework
3. SQL Server 2000
4. Web Server Statistics package. (Most any will do.)
5. Terminal Services (for remote log-in)
On the development workstation:
1. Microsoft Office
- Excel - research keywords and perform analysis, and design site structures
- FrontPage - FAST design and prototyping
- Word - create eBooks and other marketing materials, proposals, etc.
- Access - FAST database design and prototyping, migration to SQL Server
2. Keyword Research Tool (my own system -- creates keyword lists and collects bid prices on several PPC engines)
3. Visual Studio .NET - web application development
4. Terminal Server Client, and SQL Server Client - to connect to and administer the servers remotely.
5. MSN Messenger -- to communicate with clients, provide live support, on-line training.
I don't include IE, because it's built-in.
Marty R. Milette, P.Prog.
CTT+, MCT, MCSE+I, MCP+SB, MCSA, MCSD
Here's mine:
1) Multiedit - try it is brilliant, you can edit almost anything with syntax highlighting, regex search/replace across multiple files, edit over ftp ...
2) Putty
3) WinSCP
4) MySQL control center
5) LAMP

2. Macromedia Fireworks
3. LeapFTP
4. ApacheHTTP/PHP/MySQL/phpMyAdmin (wha? thers an install package out there somewheres )
5. Winamp (hurrr...)
6. Google (i cheated and put 6; you cheat and search google )
This is a really neat thread you guys... I'm going to have to come back to it and take the time to poke around and check out some of the links and tools you guys use. One thing that I didn't see mentioned in this thread that I really enjoy using as of lately is a little freeware thing by Softnik Technologies called "Good Keywords."
1. Photoshop/ImageReady
2. Dreamweaver/NotePad (either will work...but in DW it's all color-coded...which I love)
3. WS_FTP
4. A Good Reliable Host
5. IE/Netscape/Opera/FireFox (for Testing)
I think is the best manager and along with the plugins is no substitute for:
- file management
- basic editor (html, php etc)
- FTP / SSH manager
- advanced search & replace in files
- CD cataloger
It is best for speed - almost no need to use mouse.
Also some over 500 plugins and a large community: you can find a plugin
for anything.
I don't tend to do commercial sites, just my site and one or two "club" sites... so this is my list.
1. EditPlus or TextPad
2. Photoshop
3. ExpressionEngine (CMS for my site)
4. CSSZengarden.com (for CSS inspiration)
5. Firefox. (+ the others just to check it all works)
I'd also like to say w3.org's validator progs but ran out of space... This must be the longest thread in history. 3ish years... very impressive. Also its fun to look back through and see the shift away from IE and its total lack of support for standards...
1) Note Tab Pro (well worth the upgrade)
2) PSP (7 or
3) TopStyle Lite
4) E_Cloaker (gotta hide those email addresses)
5) ws_ftple
6) JAlbum (love working with photo albums)
7) Firefox
HotScripts.com (can always find a solution here)
9) GoldenSelection Notes (nice little db to hold all my code snips)
10) CSE html validator (the lite version is all I need)
\\// Robert
The grass is always greener on the other side -- but that's because they use more manure.
1) Notepad - I edit my HTML in it
2) Paint Shop Pro - Easier to use than Photoshop
3) Email
4) The Webmaster Forums !!!!
5) Excel - Loads of data in it
1. Dreamweaver MX
2. Photoshop 7.0
3. Outlook 2003 (to manage my email)
4. NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 (allows me to have 2 monitors)
5. Linksys Wireless G USB Adapter (so that I can have a wireless connection in my basement)
I guess...:
1- Frontpage: or else i will use notepad, man I dont have time to write a 2 lines code just to show a word..
2- Paint: Photoshop is my #1, however if anything happened, I would not heitaste to use Paint or paint shop pro. I usually use paint to save screenshots
3- IE
4- and of course, Ipowerweb. I wouldnt die without ipowerweb, however their support is a kicking-*** (ah well, usually...) .
1. Frontpage
2. Paint Shop Pro (I've used it for a long time, and it's really improved with the last couple of versions.)
3. Scite (Text editor, along the same lines as UltraEdit, but free. Useful for both HTML and Perl/PHP.)
4. Smart_FTP (I used WS_FTP for awhile, and I like this one a lot better. Recursive deleting helps.)
5. Outlook (Keeps track of meetings, contacts and emails. What more could you need?)
Not quite in the top 5:
6. Swish (Affordable flash alternative)
7. Firefox (A browser in a class by itself, its extensions make it a powerful webmastering tool.)
I'm sure there are others I'm forgetting, as I'm not at my home computer. These are all apps I use at home for my design business. Work is a mostly different set, including Dreamweaver, UltraEdit and PenguiNet.

Wow! My list sure has changed in the 2+ years since I joined. Part of that is due to switching to a Mac, but... wow.
Here's the new one.
1. Dreamweaver MX 2004
2. Firefox with web developer toolbar
3. TextWrangler
4. phpMyAdmin (web-based mySQL administrative tool)
5. iCal / Mail / Address book. (For the same reasons I listed in Outlook above, although I like the interface and features of Mac's tools way more than Outlook)
Hey guys, new to the forum, but I thought I would give you my input.....
1. Netscape: For browsing and testing html elements (There's a permanent ban on IE in my household)
2. Smart FTP (used ftp explorer before, until I realised how poor it was....)
3. Paint shop pro: for all your imaging needs...
4. Outlook (I'm not the best organiser in the world)
5. PHPdev: for testing and modding php files at home

Mine have changed quite a bit since the last time I posted (see page 1)
1. Opera - really can't live without it now that I'm using its mail client
2. Dreamweaver MX
3. Photoshop or reasonable substitute
4. hosting & internet service
5. Flash (I guess.. I can never decide on the last one!)
It's been a while since I've done this and It changes pretty much everytime I use it but:
1. Firefox, Browsing is soooo much faster and easier with Firefox!
2. Studio MX (dreamweaver, fireworks and flash).
3. Textpad (textpad.com)
4. iTunes
5. SmartFTP (smartftp.com)
mjames wrote: To kick things off here, what would they be for you? I will be posting mine shortly.
1. HTML-Kit - free text editor, syntax coloring, code completion, lots of plugins
2. WinMerge - compare two folders, determine changed lines in each file
3. ReplaceEm - mass find & replace, with regex features
4. FileZilla - super fast, modern FTP client
5. Inkscape - vector graphics, what I use to make most site images nowadays
The only thing I would mention about my list is that they are all fully capable, free tools. I paid nothing for my development suite.
1. Lots of coffee (top priority).
2. Coffeecup HTML editor (never liked Dreamweaver).
3. CSE HTML validator (followed by a round with W3C).
4. Search Engine Buddy (finds and checks keywords, title length, etc).
5. Blade FTP (and more coffee).
6. Yes image processing program, I have so many there not room here for the list.
These are my top priorities.
But there is a seventh, no one has mentioned. (a working computer).
I prefer to use the following software for building a good webpage.
1. Dreamweaver mx = For editing html/css files
2. Corel12/Fireworks mx = For photo editing with special effects
3. Flash max/SwishMx = For Flash Animation that can attrack more viewers
4. mysql/php = For Server Side Scripting w/ database
5. cuteftp 5.0 = For Uploading Files
This is the best ever software i used.
SearchBliss posted this at 21:54 — 19th July 2005.
photoshop and fireworks - I really should learn to use one or the other, but there certain things I know how to do only in one or the other
Topstyle pro
cute ftp pro - good for managin lots of sites
Firefox with the web development extension - ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL - if you don't have it your missing out on a plug-in that will make your life 1000x easier
Colour Schemer studio - not really necessary, but easier than my colour wheel books, I only use it for web stuff though, not for print
JeevesBond posted this at 11:55 — 23rd August 2005.
A lot of that stuff comes standard in Opera (validation, disabling stuff, changing the CSS etc.). I do like that outline feature and the resize is nice too.
Opera is good, but I have to say that i don't worry too much about it when developing. I know that it declares itself as IE on occasion, but the server stats show that it is not a valuable use of my time, and clients money. Most of my work will render perfectly in Opera by default, but if it's a pixel or 2 off, i have to confess that I leave it.
Um, that's not the point here. If you use standards compliant development methods O usually isn't a problem anyway. Point is that many of the things that come as extensions in FF are standard features in O, but also that you can get a lot of added functionality in FF if you want it (which is good - it is in cases like these that I wish O had similar extnesions, but it's not enough of a downside to make me switch). Six of one, half a dozen of the other
Actually - a pixel or 2 off wouldn't be enough to bother with in any case, IMO.
1. IE
2. Excel - used to convert everything
3. Itunes - ipod - can't work without it
4. Putty - basic, but it's great
5. CoffeeCup - used it since the begining, and always see myself falling back on it

1. Dreamweaver
2. Adobe Video Suite <--- That covers the 2 I need, Photoshop and Premiere

4. Firefox & Explorer
5. Coldfusion <---Think I am the only one who uses this...
1. Notepad
2. Opera
3. Hotmail E-Mail Service
4. Wikipedia.org
5. Paypal.com
With these 5 tools/services combined I can:
Communicate with anyone I want.
Find out about virtually anything with accurate information.
Write articles, scripts, web-pages, and more.
Earn money & make a living.
I was tempted to replace Wikipedia.org with Dictionary.com, without which I wouldn't be able to verify alot of my work or write as effectively.
I'm updating mine since it's been almost 4 years! Holy cow!

1. Photoshop, can't do anything without it
2. Dreamweaver. I love the syntax highlighting. Once you've used it for a few weeks, you'll never go back to notepad.
3. My host
4. Forums like this
5. PHP
1) Dreamweaver 8, especially its site manager feature, allowing for instant upload of a page for testing of PHP code.
2) Firefox, with the web developer toolbar, and IE for testing in
3) Illustrator CS2
4) Fireworks for quick cropping of images and editing the levels
5) Windows Media Player to keep me company when I'm working
6) MSN Messanger and GTalk for the same reason!
7) Thunderbird for all my e-mail
Google homepage for keeping my information in a single, accessible place
I need help from you all.. Actually I know nothing about web hosting but I have high desire to build hosting company, so I need to know what are needed to set up web hosting company? Eg. Equipment, software, system etc...
And If I run Linux system.. what is the full package? Such as MySQL, pHp etc...
1. vim
2. Kwrite/NotePad2
3. Photshop/The GIMP
4. Front Page to draw tables
5. FileZilla to upload
5½. Firefox, IE and a laptop (because the screen is larger than 1024x768).
There are five things I use right now when making my webpages:
1. Mozilla Composer
2. Paint (Windows)
3. Notepad
4. Compupic
5. MS Gif Animator
I know these are really basic simple tools but I am working on a small to non existant budget. I guess you could call it web development on a shoestring. If you want the the things I wish I could ALWAYS have to do my work:
1. Coffee
2. Quiet
3. A comfy chair at my desk
4. Advil for eyestrain
5. A phone that doesn't ring.

4) All browsers. Testing is utmost important, cause I don't know the DOM

Since I haven't responded to this thread since December 2004, I'll list my 5 again:
1. Opera (my primary browser), Firefox with Firebug, plus other browsers for testing.
2. A good text editor with customizable shortcuts, syntax highlighting, and all thre rest. Autocomplete is particularly important to me. Quanta Plus is my current favourite.
3. A good CMS. Drupal for big things, Wordpress for blogs or other small things.
4. A good file manager, which I didn't realize I couldn't live without until I switched to Mac last fall; should be able to connect to servers via ssh or samba (Konquerer).
5. Ahh! I only have one spot left and I need Inkscape and Gimp. And a terminal. And analytics! Very important.
Thing I can live without:
1. Windows .... well, if it weren't for IE 7 which isn't available in IEs4Linux.
1- Firebug
Especially when a client asks you to install and edit a template they bought, that has 90 billion pointlessly nested tables
2- Coffee
I know it's not a service or tool, but I would get nothing done without at least the "wake up cuppa"
3- php.net
I'm useless at remembering all the built in functions, even common ones
4- Music
Again, not really a tool or service, but helps me code faster
5- Coffee
Now I realize that's technically only one tool/service, but as it's such a big requirement I thought I'd mention it twice (laser cannons anyone?)
An hour after the "wake up cuppa" I am often scratching my head and needing a boost. The second and third coffee does to me what spinach does for popeye
(If there was a 6th one, it would be my mouse scroll wheel, for this page alone )
Five Tools I couldn't live without(even though theres more)
- Design Mode Webpage Editor
- PrintScreen Button and copy and paste function of a computer
- Paint and Microsoft Photo Editor
- RealDraw (for quick graphics)
- EditPlus2 (ascii editor program codes)

hm, interesting, I don't know whether I am old fashioned, but I think that the very top BASIC 5 items for me would be:
1) TextPad or Windows NotePad to write the source code and scripts
2) Paint Shop Pro7 or PhotoStudio2000 to design graphics
3) Microsoft Internet Explorer to display page
4) SWiSHMax to design Flash animations
5) and the Good Manual, like the http://www.createwebpageguide.com which gives you a free web site template with fully functional contact form submission script on top of teaching you the most up to date XHTML and CSS design.
1) d-cubed GTD formatted Tiddlywiki to keep track of project states and notes
(http://www.dcubed.ca/) I forget... alot.
2) At least two monitors! The more text they can display the better!
3) Subversion
4) rsync backups, mirroring, deploy tool
5) Really diggin' Netbeans for my new PHP projects at the moment.
It is good to see that IE still gets a lot of support on the webmaster forums. I know that it gets an awful lot of bad press these days.:)
If they are using IE8, I think it is not bad. FF is y favorite.
Things I can not do with out are:
Internet service
Firefox
Google search
my email accounts
notepad.

Tools:
1. swish - weak program
2. cuteFTP - weak
3. nuendo - why re-invent the wheel
4. capsa - why would you want to capture local packets?
5. cool edit - it was cool when I didnt know html but now it's useless
Services:
1. Kazaa - alert('adware/spyware')
2. AOL - same as above
3. windows patches - they don't work anyway
4. any IP spoofer site - only tempts you to do harm
5. na
sorry bout listing more than 5 above, 5 is not enough. You need to list atleast 7.

I think that's all I need.

2. HTML editor (HTML Kit) - Gotta code it.
3. Image app. (Ulead PhotoImpact 6) - Gotta make it look nice.
4. FTP access (WS_FTP95 LE) - Gotta have host access.
5. Full high level test bed (Apache, PHP, MySQL, Perl) - Gotta code high dollar complicated sites with dynamic capabilities.

I love freeware, and the ability to do business on the web without spending more than we have to. So with that in mind, here are my freeware top picks...
[1] 1stPage2000 - a really superior html editor
[2] IrFanView - to crop and resize images
[3] WS_FTP - we all know how good that is
[4] EmC5.0 - the best way I've found to control all the spam email we get
[5] NoteTab Light - very versatile text editor (never need Notepad again)
And here's one that has a very low price tag...
[6] Xara 3d - make buttons, banners, and headlines the *really* easy way!

2)1automationwiz.com-Simplifies shopping cart setup and delivery of my digital goods. (I sell e-books)
3)SmartFTP- Great window ftp client just in case you can't publish your web for some odd reason.
4) Webmaster forums, including this one. Great for ideas, tips, or anything in general.
5)Sitepronews.com- good place to get started on website promotion.

Leaving out all the browsers since its obvious that I use all the major ones for testing. Could live without all of them but Mozilla!
Anyways:
* Notepad
* Photoshop
* LeechFTP
* Php.net
* Devshed.com
That's all. What more could one ask from life?

2. Dreamweaver
3. MySQLCC - Great tool for admin of MySQL databases
4. Notepad - Always handy!
5. IE - Opera - Nutscrape - Need the lot for testing, my preference as a browser is Opera

I think is the best manager and along with the plugins is no substitute for:
- file management
- basic editor (html, php etc)
- FTP / SSH manager
- advanced search & replace in files
- CD cataloger
It is best for speed - almost no need to use mouse.
Also some over 500 plugins and a large community: you can find a plugin
for anything.
Also FREE

1. Frontpage

3. ReplaceEm - mass find & replace, with regex features

The only thing I would mention about my list is that they are all fully capable, free tools. I paid nothing for my development suite.

photoshop and fireworks - I really should learn to use one or the other, but there certain things I know how to do only in one or the other
Topstyle pro
cute ftp pro - good for managin lots of sites
Firefox with the web development extension - ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL - if you don't have it your missing out on a plug-in that will make your life 1000x easier
Colour Schemer studio - not really necessary, but easier than my colour wheel books, I only use it for web stuff though, not for print

I'm sure all the functionality will be built into Opera anyway, but these things must be checked.

I can actually hear people growling at me!
You MUST get the developer toolbar - I promise, you will not know how you did your job without it as soon as you start using it. It's amazing - https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?id=60

There are five things I use right now when making my webpages:
1. Mozilla Composer
2. Paint (Windows)
3. Notepad
4. Compupic
5. MS Gif Animator
I know these are really basic simple tools but I am working on a small to non existant budget. I guess you could call it web development on a shoestring. If you want the the things I wish I could ALWAYS have to do my work:
1. Coffee
2. Quiet
3. A comfy chair at my desk
4. Advil for eyestrain
5. A phone that doesn't ring.
(Don't you just hate it when a telemarketer calls right in the middle of a detailed code setup? Shhh...I used to be one.)

Wow..Most of you are similar to mine..I'm honored
1) PSP 5.0 (old, I know..
and I never could get comfy with Photoshop 7.0
2) Dreamweaver MX 2004 (I know what you're saying, Conrad..)
3) WsFTP32 it is by far the best. I'm still using a ver 10 years old.. "if it works you stick with it" - John Candy in "Brewster's Millions"
4) All browsers. Testing is utmost important, cause I don't know the DOM
5) Flash (Macromedia suite MX 2004)
I've changed email from Outlook Express(hated MS Outlook) to Thunderbird (Mozilla). Use Mozilla and Firefox most of the time.
(Hate IE7)
Maybe we could make a list of tools we hate... or is there too much hatin' goin' on in the world already?..
BTW.. this is still coming from webmasters.. right?

(If there was a 6th one, it would be my mouse scroll wheel, for this page alone )

hm, interesting, I don't know whether I am old fashioned, but I think that the very top BASIC 5 items for me would be:
1) TextPad or Windows NotePad to write the source code and scripts
2) Paint Shop Pro7 or PhotoStudio2000 to design graphics
3) Microsoft Internet Explorer to display page
4) SWiSHMax to design Flash animations
5) and the Good Manual, like the http://www.createwebpageguide.com which gives you a free web site template with fully functional contact form submission script on top of teaching you the most up to date XHTML and CSS design.

Guys! Get off the costly, proprietary bandwagon! Wake up to open-source:
with SO MANY free applications available just by ticking the box!
with all sorts of cool extensions including PHP & Ruby on Rails (netbeans.org)
with cool extensions like Firebug (css, dom etc page inspector - brilliant!)
a fantastic FREE replacement for Photoshop or PSP, with STACKS of FREE plugins
allows me to run XP Pro inside a VM under Ubuntu. Why? Just to be crazy. Just to check on IE stupidity mainly. I have everything I need for IT life and happiness in Ubuntu 9.04!
I am an Open-Source web developer, using Linux/PHP/MySQL & Joomla CMS / SugarCRM & vTiger CRM and stacks of other community owned goodies to create incredible web sites!
