favicon question...
Does anyone know what prompts the browser to request favicon.ico from the server? Could it be the user's action of adding the site to "Favorites"? Sounds logical...

duh.. test it yourself taff!
Yes, the call for favicon.ico appears to be triggered by adding the page to your favorites. That is very nice to know!

... hmm thats right.... favicon... i almost forgot about those things, they never seemed to work too well since the icon would go away in a short time.
anyone can do any amount of work provided it isnt the work they are supposed to be doing.

in IE you need to add it to favorites, in Mozilla (and id assume Netscape) it always shows whether it's in your favelist or not.

I'm not too concerned with how well it works from a user's perspective. I don't even have a favicon. However, if the call is made to the server as the site is being added, well then great - it means that folks are bookmarking my site. Never a bad thing

actually, i think i was wrong. i *think* this is how it works, but i dont feel like testing it right now...
if you specifically link a favicon in a document, such as:
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="./favicon.ico" type="image/ico" />
'it will always show in Mozilla browsers. Otherwise, it will only be requested when the page is bookmarked.
In IE i believe it is never requested unless you bookmark the page, or create a shortcut to it.
