Does anyone have dial-up? Can you check something for me?

Could you just let me know how long this page takes to load on dial-up?

I've tried a couple of online checkers but they don't seem to be pulling in the flash photos which are the biggest part of the page size-wise.

Not on dial up myself but using Google Analytics you can see if anyone is accessing the site from the different types of connections.

Sorry if that doesn't really help though.

It's about 1.66%, but we had a complaint about it so I wanted to check.

From a dial-up connection here in N. California the page takes 32 secs to load, with the flash header taking another 3 secs.. Each subsequent image in the header loads in about 3 seconds, as judged from the "wait" icon on the image as well as the "activity" indicator on the connection icon.

I like that you can stop the animation, and that the images are loaded "as needed" rather than all at once. As I normally surf with Flash turned off, I was originally unaware that I was missing anything. Nice "graceful degradation" there, Megan. Smiling

Thanks a lot. 32 seconds isn't a big deal for dial-up, IMO.

In the future if you are wondering how long it takes to load you can simulate 56k with this Firefox extension. Smiling

Hmmm... that extension won't work for me (FF2 on mac or FF3 on Linx) ... I wonder if it's Windows only...

"Firefox Throttle" could not be installed because it is not compatible with your Firefox build type (Linux_x86-gcc3). Please contact the author of this item about the problem.

Judging by this message I'd say you're right Megan. I sent a quick message to the author of that plugin:

Just tried out the bandwidth throttling plugin for Firefox ( http://www.uselessapplications.com/en/Application/FirefoxThrottle.aspx ). Unfortunately it doesn't appear to be working in Linux.

Am just dropping you a line to let you know that there is interest among users of platforms other than Microsoft's.

I'll leave the decision of whether porting is worth it to your discretion. Smiling

Kind Regards,
Liam.

Have to at least let them know there is interest outside the Windows camp. Judging by the .asspix filename on all their Web pages, and that Firefox extension, I'd guess they're not even aware of what GNU/Linux is! Smiling

Well, it's a clear sign that the world is going to pot. Soon everyone will have to face the wrath of Stallman. Microsoft lackeys! Laughing out loud

.asspix? Bummer.

Ahhhhh, I've looked at this thread a couple of times, but have only just got the gag. What can I say? A little set of drums, inside my head just went: 'Badoom-tssshhh!'

I am running off a phone modem which is running at 115.2Kbps and it took just over 9 seconds to load which loaded all the images on the first page and once loaded it took even less to navigate the site...

Thanks for the link to the extension for FF, was just asking someone about that the other night to try to find the name of it.

at 24k (don't ask) it took less than a minute to get the text/style up and another minute for the images to load. So I'd say it's quite fast.
