DOCTYPE + template

So a client of mine want me to fill out a template. The thing is, the program I am useing (ACE HTML) keeps tring to insert a HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/strict.'
When it does it throughs alingment of everything off. I dont want to go through the whole page and redesign it but I dont want to keep the DOCTYPE out. Sugestions?

can you change the strict to transitional ?
the editor should have some setting somewhere
