A CMS to live by...
Id like to hear from a few people about what CMS they use, why, and such and such...I have currently one site (buffledeggs.com) and hope to soon have my personal site up for a portfolio etc.
I have been around the area of Content Management Systems, mostly PHP/MySQL based, ranging from simple FrontEnd's, Bulletin Boards, News Forums, and WYSIWYG editors, all the way to High-End Gaming Interfaces, Complex Callendars, and even heard of a guy trying to use Java/PHP/MySQL to create an RPG in the web browser. Unfortunately, through my quests, I have yet to find a CMS that can hold its ground and still be relatively affordable, if not free.
On my own site, I started with a system called EZContent, but was severly hung-up when it came to the limited admin interface. I moved to PostNuke, thinking that my worries were over, because of all the great features and their wonderful ability to stay "on to of the game" as it were with updates etc.
The severe caveat, obviously unexpected by me was the recent (within the last year or so) downfall of PostNuke's "game", leaving me quite stranded. So, I turned to a different path, although much more complicated in nature, which I believed would give me what I needed ... Room to Experiment & Expand! -- TYPO3 -- Unfortunately, I have no ability to install TYPO3 on my current server, due to memory limits, as well as Admin limitations...lol.

I know some people swear by pmachine.com. I've never used it. Usually I do things the hard way, writing a crude engine from scratch on each project. Although, recently I've looked into using smarty.php.net to manage templates.

ExpressionEngine is PMachine's new CMS and apparently it rocks. I am installing it this week for my own site.

Nothing against PMachine, but for a single installation lisence, $150 - $200 is a little out of my budget. Any others you may have heard about?
I try at various times to sift through the rubbage at places like hotscripts.com, but I have rarely come across a general PHP/MySQL content system that was capable of doing anything more than a specified task or set of tasks.
Im not much of a UNIX guru, I just hold my own. Nor am I the greatest at visual layouts and eye-candy. But when it comes to hacking up code to getting it to do my bidding, I continually exceed even my own expectations. I just have a way of sitting down with a language and figuring out how to do stuff, even with no idea about syntax etc. (Well if error messages dont exist and there is no debugging capabilities Im done for - but hey)

See that nice search box up there? Type in CMS and go. There are many threads here with many recommendations, some of which are free.

Pmachine has a free option for non commercial use. and Expression Engine only has a trial version for free.
