cgi scripts

Hi.........

I would like to learn how to use cgi scripts on my web site. I do not want to become a programmer. For example I have successfully been using various Java scripts for nice effects on my web site: "cut, modify for my use and paste" kind of stuff. And as is probably obvious my knowledge of Java is "about zippo".

Can anyone suggest a training source...........book, etc........ that would be useful for this purpose: a basic tool, but not designed for the future expert??

Thanks!

Okay, most Perl (i.e. CGI) scripts come with README instruction files that give you directions -- you don't need to become a coder to install scripts of any kind. Some require more technical knowledge of others, though.

But if you don't want to hand code, there is no book on how to follow directions. Wink Most importantly, it takes patience and desire. You need to familiarize yourself with terms like CHMOD: http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&q=CHMOD+tutorial

Marc is right. Almost any CGI script comes with installation instructions. What types of CGI scripts are you looking to install? Some script archives that might be helpful are: cgi-resources.com and hotscripts.com

Good luck,

I saw a form on a web site that allows visitors to enter name/email of friends that they think would like the site. Then the list is automatically emailed to all on the list.

here==> http://www.choconet1.com/cgi-bin/refer.cgi

I printed oput the code but couldn't figure out how to install it properly on my computer because I don't have the refer.cgi file which I think is the key. So I started looking around, discovered I needed to know more 1st!!

Okay... That is a CGI script used on someone else's web site - you can't take that... You need to look for a place that provides the CGI script as a downloadable file. This is the type of place that would have installation instructions. There are plenty of "referral" and "tell a friend" type scripts at the resources posted above.

Good luck!

Brian
