Best forum / messageboards?

Hey all, I run a site and a forum that currently drains too much cpu (and bandwidth)... the bandwidth I can deal with, but the cpu issue, my host can't sustain it for long...

I'm currently using YaBB SE 1.3.1, and am wondering if anyone knows what's the best forum available in terms of efficiency and i'd also like to have something that can work with a portal system like *nuke or something...

Any ideas?

you will want to avoid flatfile forums -- any of the various forums that use a db will be superior. best to check with the host on approved forums.

I'm currently running a forum on php/mysql... YaBB SE yabb.info...

Thankfully, the devs are awesome... they've actually helped me out with much of this, and I thought I've asked for too much ... they just (and i mean, a few minutes ago) went into my db and optimized it a bit for me...

and have ensured me that an optimized version will come out in the near future, so I'm very thankful for that too!

The problem with my forum is that it's db is 40mb and the querries drain loads of CPU...

so hopefully, this will change sometime soon...

few ways to optimize that -- archive older threads, purge older threads, kill old members who haven't posted in x months. Basically, you need to do some db management to get rid of the stuff that's weighing it down and making the load too high.

For the free boards, PHPBB is the best, plus version 2.0 has just been released. For the $ boards, no doubt, Vbulletin (the one used here) is the best.

If your looking for a forum that works with *nuke why not try XForum from http://trollix.com or maybe one of the phpbb forums that have been ported to nuke.
