Being a webmaster...at a young age
Ok, here goes.
Hi all,
In my last year at high school and will have finished my GCSE exams by this summer. Spend a lot of my time on the computer and moderate on 3 forums so I know some basic stuff. I'm predicted a B for my IT exam which is a pretty good pass.
I've built small free websites before (so they're pretty limited) and enjoyed it immensely. So, here come the questions.
I'm not planning on going to college (but that could change if needs be)
1) What exactly does being a webmaster involve?
2) Do you need qualifications or further education in IT (going to college, uni etc..)?
3) Does age matter to possible customers? ( I imagine a lot of people wouldn't want a 16/17yr old building their website...)
Cheers for any answers, and hopefully you all have a bit of patience, as no doubt I'll be asking many more questions.

Age is only a number to most.
Once you know the basics the real experience is picked up from doing (although a business course doesn't hurt).
There is no exact definition of a webmaster, some say they just build web pages, others say it involves graphics, SE and dealing with the client/boss. Sometimes it's easier to start as a one man band and in a few years if you can make a go of it hire someone or outsource the stuff you're not the best at (can do that at any stage).
Build up your portfolio, even if it involves doing sites for free, just be sure to agree to have website by you at the bottom or in the source code.
Knowing the standards (XHTML/CSS etc) can only be good for you, having a page validate is also another selling point for your work. Not that 90% of your clients will know what it means.
The biggest thing you have to remember is there are millions of people doing web design, is good money if you can get the work but getting to that steady income bit is the hardest. Start off as a hobby, don't plan on getting rich quick and above all enjoy.

Being a webmaster will be lame unless you are happy to do your allocated work from 9-5. I left school after my GCSEs as i didn't want to go to University.
I went into a web design company as an apprentice and after a year got bored of what i was doing. I started 'thinking outside of the box' and decided to get my *** to college part time (after work) and learn graphic design and photography basics. I personally find getting involved in the growth of the company is far more exciting than webmaster type tasks.
My advice to you would be to try get experience in different fields, as the competition is high. You need to display passion if you really want to get somewhere.
Age has been a problem for me, but for a few years you just have to except you won't get treated fairly until you show you're more talented than the people around you. Some people will admire youthful exuberance. Just make sure you stand out.
Good luck
