Being abused by spam merchants!

I need help quick, my website has had it's name hijacked and is being used to send thousands of spam emails to the unsuspecting public.

What can I do to stop this? I don't even know how to send emails from my own site myself let alone how anyone else can do it.

I've also got the problem of some little scrotum sending virus carrying emails to people using my website as the return address.

Please help as it's really 'effing' me off!

Thanks folks.

Smiler.

Your site most likely has NOT been hijacked, so don't worry about that. What is most likely happening is someone sending out a ton of junk mail just used your domain name in the "from" e-mail address. It is a bother, but not too much can be done with it. I have about 3 times in the past year I have had about 2 days of tons of e-mails from AOL, YAHOO, MSN, etc servers sending replies that "The message you tried to send was not deliverable" for all the outdated e-mail addresses they tried to spam. I get them, because some jacka** decided to use my e-mail address in the "From" field.

Part of having a web site, I'd gladly go back to having that small of a problem. Lately I have been setting up filters for the 3000+ e-mails a day that come into all of my domain names... now if i had five cents for each one... LOL

Set up a catch-all for the address being used and send the comebacks to black-hole (somewhere in cyber space no one has ever come back from) or get your host to disable mail support on your domain if you don't use it.

The virus sending is always going on. Either
A) someone is spoofing your email and sending to massive amounts of people. or
B)Your infected with one of the many worms out there and it is using your computer to send mail without you knowing.

I'd update your Anti-Virus software, boot into safemode (if your using windows) and scan your whole computer, You should do this anyway every week or so.

It's deffinately third party mail sending as I don't think I even have the ability to send emails from my site. I think it's a service I didn't sign up for. Any emails that get sent from my computer would go through my normal AOL account address as my computer doesn't know that an email address with my website in it even exists.

The catch thing sounds good but does this work if it's just people using my site as the return address and not actualy sending them from my site?

oh, thanks for the replies folks, it's much appreciated and I'm sorry to hear that there are people out there who have it much worse than I do, I get at least 50 returned mail messages a day and that's bad enough but 3000!

Can't think of anyone in particular but then some people would get a kick out of this kind of thing I guess. Personaly I prefer to spend my free time in the garage or down the pub.
