Hi Guys

Looking at some logs for my site, I see a lot of 404 errors, this is unusual. Some I recognise some I dont and some i dont understand why they are errors as the page and file name is correct but they have not been indexed by the bots even though I see there are 2 attemps to do so.
Can anybody help? how I can find out more and sort this out

Well, maybe with more data.

What does "some I recognize some I dont" even mean? A 404 error is a 404 error. Period.

Hey Brandy.K

No need to be so brash man, after all I am a newbie at this.

What I meant was some of the 404 errors are files I recognise as files from my site but dont understand why they are 404 errors. Others files I dont recognise as being files on the site.

If you would like specifics I will give you them if I can and perhaps you can assist in helping me give you that information perhaps by telling me where to look.

There is such a thing is 404 search spamming (i made that name up Laughing out loud lol)

Is commonly done by porn and low lifers that cause 404 errors so their domain name shows on your error logs (which a lot of hosts allow to be seen), this to a search engine can be seen as a one way link to them upping their postion in search engines.

Other reasons can be you've changed your site around and some older cached links are being used
kiddy scripters looking for a way in(especially if you have a forum or guestbook etc)

Can you list some of the ones you don't recognise, just choose the "dont link links" on this forums option when you post it, cheers

Have you tried using a broken links script to detect if your site is linking to missing files?
