Im looking for free or inexpensive software that I can start my website.
the software I have in mind would be something that would be managed from an admin area and would allow people to join for free but if they would like to sell something on my site it would cost money to post info and pictures. similar to classified and or an auction but I dont want people to be able to bid just buy, maybe integrated with paypal. does anyone know of any such application?

It sounds like you need a CMS or Content Management System.

There are lots of free applications out there and I would recommend drupal.

If you use drupal you will need to install several different modules.

for anything buying or selling you will need either the ecomerce or ubercart modules.

There are tons (almost literally) of modules for drupal most are free (99.99%) and the software itself is free. It takes a little bit of a learning curve and allows you to do almost anything.

You will also need to create a theme, which can be difficult. A recommendation would be to start with a simple theme and adapt it to your liking.

Also welcome to the forums Smiling

Joomla or WordPress Tools for Easy, Cheap Web Development, Content management applications are smoking hot for web masters from guru to beginner. Content management systems (CMS) range in cost from free, to dirt cheap, to very expensive. But for most entrepreneurs, the open-source CMS tools, which are free, like Joomla, Mambo, and WordPress, will suit just fine.
