Adding live chat on my website
Hi!
I would like to add a live chat service on my website. I need a solution that enables people visiting my website to chat with me in real time.
Specifically I need something that shows visitors if I am online and
that warns me when visitors try to chat.
A freeware script would be best.
Any idea? Thank you.

The one I use on my company website is Crafty Syntax Live Help. It's the best one I have found over the last few years of using it.

It is not too hard to create your own, it just takes a bit of server side programming and nowadays an XMLHTTPrequest.
A Java applet might be another approach, though it is possible to do this all just using the standard facilities offered by the browser.
You have to be a little careful with using a 3rd party tool, as problems can appear later as browsers get updated, and if you don't know the code then you are left waiting for an update or forced to go round the merry go round of selecting a new chat system that does work.

No I doubt this is possible though just HTML. They would need to be signed in while they click on the link if it were possible, much easier to just let them do it manually you know, keep it simple.
thanks,

I would have to disagree. Very rarely does an updated browser break a script like the one I posted above. It's usually the upgrading of server software that might break something critical. Even so, using a third-party script that's open source will yield a patch far quicker than if you wrote it your self. Plus, you can always find support somewhere.

Though its not hard to develop our own chat. we will have to put a big effort to get that flexibility. so something like Crafty Syntax live help would be easier for you.

Just gave CraftySyntax a try for a client here at work, a little too "technical" for the client we have, may look at seeing how it works to write out own though, but did have all the features we needed than many others didn't, which is to be able to have more than just one "company" person online to chat with, and as people come in they can grab them and handle them separately.
