Your opinions on 1and1 ?
Hey,
I've been with fatcow.com for about 4 years... and while they have *GREAT* customer service, I need a host that can give me more for my money. (ie: php5, more space, bandwidth, cheaper domain registration, etc).
I went ahead and purchased my domains through 1and1, only 5.99 per domain! Much better than 20 dollars a year I was paying through fatcow.
But do you know anything about 1and1's customer service and such? Or their reliability? Their hosting packages are insanely cheap for what you get, so I have to wonder how they're doing it. Either making VERY little and getting a ton of customers, or sacraficing in other areas... such as customer service/etc.
I did go ahead and get hosting, they have a 90 guaruntee so If I'm not happy I can switch to someone else (and just keep the domains with them).
Similar question for DreamHost.com. They seem like they have great customer service, and decent packages. I was thinking of trying them if 1and1 does not work out.

I just signed up with 1 and 1, two months ago. I have been extreamly happy with them so far. They don't have all those cool asp compnents my old hosting had but their admin panel is way more powerfull!

Insanely cheap usually means they're overloading their servers or indeed their customer service is awful (or both)! Often a google search for $companyname sucks will return any potential pitfalls (substitute $companyname for the company you're looking for), so in your case it would be: http://www.google.com/search?client=opera&rls=en&q=1and1+sucks&sourceid=opera&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8

One and One are great hosts.
i have had 2 domain names for over a year now, and recently setup an MS HOSTING business package and all is grand! we also use them at work for their linux hosting and no problems!
only problem occurs when you want to do somthing that isnt in their control panel. They can kick up a fuss about that.

These guys have a freaking data center. I have not really had any proublems along those lines. Although a proublem has come to my attention about their default page. Every time I name a page index.aspx it loads a one the same page form this one specific location.

Just because they have a data center doesn't have anything to do with whether they overload their servers or not.

bja888 I think you'd find most web hosts are on data centers, they do not have unlimited bandwidth. They are like you getting a reseller account, you can oversell it, host some big sites on it (resource hogs) and your other sites will suffer, with your host it's other clients that suffer.
