Why is CT spamming ?
Or did they went totally crazy ?
prolog:
I host/own a few adult sites.
Fo obvious reasons I keep my name out of it as far as possible.
Last week I got 16 (sixten) emails from CT(=communitech) adressed to the email of my ripe-handle(s) and with my name on the top.
They were telling me how much they liked my site and if I'd like to change to their superior services/hosting.
There are just a few points that worry me:
1. Commercial use of ripe data is strictly forbidden. And that's the only place where they could have gotten the info.
2. Their AUP states "no adult content". And they told me "we really like your <real hardcore name>.com site." What should I think about that ?
3. They offered unlimted bandwith. For an adult site. For 22$ per month. I never go for that bait.
4. They offered me free DB (mysql) access. And unlimted script usage.
Something is very strange here.
How reliable are they ?
If they are really good and keep the "unlimted" promise I might ignore the spamming and go for their offer.

I got the same **** and personally think they should be given the same treatment any spammer gets...shut down. I would never go with them strictly because they use such underhanded techniques. It's pathetic and I hope they unleash a barage of hack attempts and DoS attacks...morons

He didn't say where he was hosted now, he was talking about Communitech. He mentioned that he wanted to keep his name off the site (for personal reasons).
I am guessing the ripe data he was talking about was from a whois lookup. The only way to connect a domain to its owner. If you don't have your name or email address on your site, and you get spammed, you know where it came from.

Yes, please share what the term "ripe data" means.
Did I understand you correctly in that you operate a few adult sites where there is "no adult content" allowed? If so, I sure hope you have an emergency plan to follow the day they shut you down with no notice. They will do it the day your traffic over-taxes their server.

It appears they definitely mined the whois database for their lists. The domains they sent the spam to me was referenced by the NIC handle for those domains. Shady, illegal(?), and I think should be condemned throughout the media and this business.

If they really did "mine" the whois list and that is supposed to be not allowed, IMHO, I would not go there no matter how good their offer. If they do something sleazy with their marketing, they certainly could be the same way with their customer support and service.

In my opinion, if a company is lousy enough to go to spamming, then they do not deserve your order. If they can not pay for their own advertising and have to do it the illegal way, then I think they are just as lousy as you can go. It is business ethics that fall into place.

Sorry,
I had some busy weeks.
RIPE (www.ripe.net) is the european center for "internet data".
Your nic-handles are (at least for europeans) in fact ripe-handles.
(Also that changed a bit ... and I'm not up-to-date.)
My adult sites are on an adult host, but CT offered to host them instead.
I didn't get any answer so far from CT.
If my laywers weren't busy with keeping me out of jail I would "do something" to stop CT, but right now I have bigger problems.
Did anyone accept their offer ?

Talk about spamming, there's this company in NC that (claims) to do sell refurbished laser toner cartridges. They've been sending us dozens of emails daily for months! And their emails specifically say you can not be removed by replying to the message or by calling there 800 number. You have to call their regular number (and pay long distance). When you do either it rings and rings and rings and no answer or you get a machine.
Finally, back in April we sent them a letter saying that if they continue to use our email addresses for solicitation we will bill them $500 per message starting May 1st. Well, that stopped them - for a moment. Now they're sending it again to a different email at our company (i.e. before they sent their spam to [email protected], now they're sending it to [email protected]).
Guess what? We're billing them! So far I think I have enough overdue bills from them to pay off my car. And my girlfriend is very tenacious about this sort of thing so we will collect one way or another.
