Who can use the ".edu" suffix?
I am building a web site for my class alumni reunion, and some classmates want the URL to use the ".edu" suffix. I always thought that this suffix could be used only by an educational institution. I think that ".org" would be more appropriate for an alumni group. Is there a regulation or rule about using ".edu"?
Thanks, in advance,
Roy

As far as I know, only accredited institutions can use a .edu domain. I believe it actually requires an application process (rather than just purchasing an available domain), and there is just one source for purchasing some domains. Their eligibility requirements are listed here:
http://net.educause.edu/edudomain/eligibility.asp
And you can see that an organization like yours is more suited to a .org domain. This is the same reason why even high schools or other local schools cannot even receive a .edu domain, as far as I know.

Well said, kazimmerman. .EDU means for Educational institute, therefore only the registered institutes are able to register the domain extension.
A customer used to ask me whether he can register his personal tuition centre with .EDU and sorry to say that, NO. Unless your tuition centre is registered under institute.
