Which host? - I really need help!
Hi,
I have my site http://goKewl.com hosted on http://web66.com. They have very exellent service, and I especially like that they allow cgi access in every dir and dont care about my very cpu time eating programs.
I have had some problems with liability, though (usually Monday morning from 6am to 10am) and my site has been growing to a level where I think I could pay more than $11 a month for webhosting.
I have searched hostfacts.com and hostsearch.com but I didn't find any host that could persuade me to move. I liked webhosting.com bacause of their superior network connection but they dont provide cgi access in all dirs.
I tried CIhost (there was a discussion about them in this forum) and I couldnt even reach their server
Iif any of you know a host with the following features, please post them here:
- around 40 Megs space
- cgi access in all directories
- > 2 FTP/Telnet/Pop
- They need to change my MX Record
- static IP
- bandwidth for about 10k uniques/day
- very good backbone connections
- They should be nice!!!
- They should not limit the percentage of processor usage or not enforce their limitation
- They should allow me to first duplicate and try out my site on their server and then transfer the domain name
- all that for <50$
This is a very long post, but thus it reflects how important the topic is for me.
Thanx for reading this far,
Malte

gokewl,
I might suggest you try InterLand (www.internland.net) and they give you 80MB with everything for just $19.95 a month and they are good company. Hope this helps.

I just called InterLand and they seemed like they were allright, but it took them 30 minutes not to be able to anwser the question whether cgi script are limited to cgi-bin or can be executed in every directory.
I have them under consideration though. Any other suggestions?

Hello goKewl,
I think you may have some problem with the following:
>- They should not limit the percentage of processor usage or not enforce their limitation
If we had a customer with a similar requirement, we'd have to insist that they could run their intensive scripts on the proviso that it does not affect server performance for the rest of the customer base. I would think most hosts would want this clear.
The only way you are probably going to get around this is to either buy a dedicated server for your site, or to negotiate a rate to include this provision.
Also,
>- bandwidth for about 10k uniques/day
You would really need to quantify this in actual bandwidth - i.e. MB/Day to be sure that the hosting solution you try will accomodate you.
We've found the use of CGI in any directory reasonably common in Unix hosting that we've tried. Our servers certainly allow it. I think the most likely hosting solution that would restrict this would be NT, or Unix with FrontPage extensions (it can be fussy).

I need Unix anyway and I dont use anything like Frontpage. My current ISP supports cgi-everwhere+frontpage, though.
I really dont know how much bandwidth I need but with a 20k homepage and 10k visitors a day for 31 days that would be 7.4GByte per month.
My site doesnt have any fancy stuff like MP3s though, so bandwidth shouldnt be a big problem.
I had an offer from infostarwebdesign.com and they seem allright. Does anybody have experience with them? I think they are a reseller, but I wouldnt mind that as long as they are nice and helping people.

Hi, that's infostardesign.com . I'm not sure if our clients hang around here very much, but they might. Yes, we are a reseller for PowerSurge Technologies, but we can offer you the same benefits as having an account directly with them, as well as access to our online support area, ICQ support, etc.
Thanks for your consideration

Malte,
I have talked with Brian many times via ICQ and I am very convinced that his firm is heading in the right direction. I am very confident that he will give you the best service possible and I would definitly recommend them... You always know you can find him here if you need help ... And I am glad to hear that the fact that he is a reseller is not going to change your mind! To many people judge resellers wrong when in all reality, they usually provide much better support then the upstream company! - This is an entirely new topic in and of itself.
You have my vote - Go with Brian!

I really started to like infostardesign.
I hope there is a solution for the problem that I would want to pay by credit card from Germany.
Did I ever mention I need SSI?

If your looking for a host that offers:
Free space 3MB
No advertising
then boy do I have a host for you
http://www.icestorm.com
They offer the best free webspace service that I can think of. They're fast too. Their only drawbacks are that they don't support FTP for free space and they don't have a lot of space, but for no advertising and decent services it's enough for me. (They also let you have subfolders if you were worried about that)
Hope I helped someone

Hi WebmasterGuru,
Firstly - I can concure with this choice because, as far as Free hosts go, Icestorm is highly rated.
Secondly - with a name like webmasterguru I could not wait to see your homepage, but it's not listed! Please ease the suspense!

Gotta agree, icestorm is by far the best free host I've used that doesn't require ads or allow cgi. It's a straight up bare bone reliable free host.

I've got SPAM from them too
Maybe they have some affiliation with Rampage/Neocerf or just AllAdvantage (I've heard of many people being spammed as they joined AllAdv )
Cheers
