What's it take?
So I was talking to a friend about all things web... and during rather large discussion, he asked what it would take to actually setup a server. Properly, with good protection and all that.
I didn't exactly know what to say, hopefully someone here can enlighten us?
I doubt he'd actually do it, but he's curious and so am I

Are you looking for a cost breakdown, or what?
You could get one running for next to nothing cost-wise if you install Linux or Unix along with Apache. Of course, you'd still have to pay for the hardware and then there's the internet costs.

Yes, setup a linux server, it's cost effective and you don't have to worry about viruses and stuff much, just get it running and that's it. Done

Or have it hosted, less painful but then their is less control over your uptime and other variables...

Ya, linux definately. He's wondering more about how to protect it from hacking/etc.
