A number of web sites can be hosted under one IP address and they are actualy subdirectories on the same IP. Every domain points to it's own directory.
You need to use your own IP address if you run e-commerce web site and in some other situations. But most people do not need unique IP address for their web sites.

A shared IP is simply an IP address shared by multiple sites. Most shared hosting companies operate in this way.

Yeah, they use Apache virtual hosting, so that certain domain names, from the same IP direct to certain htdocs folders.
