The web hosting industry is a pretty competitive one so, I'm guess that most of the free hosting companies got bought out, bankrupt or could no longer afford to provide free hosting.
Usually, one is much better off going for paid hosting. As the saying goes: You get what you pay for.

The source of revenue for most of those free hosts was advertising, so many of them would have gone bankrupt. It's better to offer good quality hosting at a price and not just rely on advertising for revenue.
Most of the free hosting around is truly not free anymore. That is you pay for it in dozens of popups, google adds, and lousy service after all that.
I've been with one for over a year now 50webs. No adds, no popups, and no googling. But also no php, or pearl, and such. But if you only need a simple hosting service, this one is the best. It's operated by one of the UK biggest net servers, so I guess it will be around for awhile.

50webs?thanks... wow I just check it, look pretty good, but LMAO @ Unlimited Bandwidth for free hosting... yeaaahh riiiiight
Yeah! pretty much. The only people they bother are those who try to serve downloads, and pull excessive amounts of bandwidth. But it is truly unmetered, and pretty much unlimited. I think unlimited means about 5 gigs a month, if I remember correctly.

I used to use them and they disappeared suddenly. Now they're back and giving away free hosting with unlimited bandwith, 1000MB of space, and unlimited everything else, except parked domains and that kind of stuff.

You have to request hosting, but I haven't heard of anyone being turned down and they got back to me with my username and password within 12 hours of my request.

sweeeeeeeeet let me go do my req. (Scooby-Doo laugh:hehehehoo)
I have a free website although I am creating a new, proper Site at the moment.
I use Bravenet and they have been excellent. I understand free hosts have to make up money lost through advertising but I only have a small banner that is usually taken up by a trustworthy company such as 'Dell Computers' and when I have viewed my Site, I have never had a pop-up apart from when I enter my Guestbook etc. The free tools and services they give you is what stood out from other Web Hosts and what made me use them instead of other trustworthy sites.
I would recommend them but I have heard of people having trouble with them. I guess i've just been lucky......
Take a look for yourself: Here
THere's a lot of web hosting companies that offer $2 a month and offer much more than those free web host that requires posting on forums. (Just my $.02)

50 webs, no adds, no limit to bandwidth I have ever found, and I have a ton of Hi-res photos. I have needed to converse with the staff, and found it very easy, no problems.
All the way around the best free host I have ever seen, in fact better than some paid hosting. I have been with them a little over a year now.
I just checked out 50webs.com , the free hosting has no features compared to the $3 per month, the free hosting plan IMO is designed to start up a user and "Maybe" later on that user would upgrade to the $3 or $4 per month in order to get the most out of it. It's basically marketing, offer something for free BUT with limited capabilities. Think about "SHAREWARES" for example.
one small thing i noticed. its subdomain of 50 web.
i still prefer to go for own .com name.
brand it. work hard on it. after few years, it reach a good profit time.
i will get more money from it. at least the name worth more than wat the hosting value.
That all depends, on what you want to do with your site. I don't need PHP, Pearl or any oddball stuff. Oh yes hotlinking, and downloads - I have no use for either. So the free version does all that I need CSS, HTML, and Photo Albums. It is also one of the only free servers, that will put up with a humongus bunch of photos. Even some pay accounts won't.

yup.... pay a little, and get some assurance.
at least, when u try to contacting them when u need help, there is people answering you right a way.
not like to talk to email autoresponder ....
Free web hosting is a thing of the past. Like soundtank said, there are cheap and reliable hosting now. Most prefer to just pay between $2-$4 and get a web hosting account clear of any advertising. ----Way to go.
